Kentucky Derby Winner and Past Winners

Sovereignty won in 2025 and went off at odds of 7/1, beating the favourite Journalism. This was the second win for trainer Bill Mott at the Derby and the first Derby victory for Venezuelan jockey Junior Alvarado.

In 2022, bettors were given a run for their money in the form of Rich Strike. This was the biggest upset that the Kentucky Derby has seen in its modern era, with the winning horse's odds closing out at 80/1 - the longest shot out of all 20 runners. The last upset of this kind was 110 years ago, in 1913 when winner Donerail's odds closed out at 91/1.

This was the first time trainer Eric Reed won at the Kentucky Derby. Top trainers at the Kentucky Derby include Bob Baffert (6 wins) tied with Ben A. Jones (6 wins) and Todd Pletcher (2 wins).

The Triple Crown

Horses that win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes races become part of an exclusive club as one of the race horse greats. Only 13 horses have made it so far since the race's inception in 1875. The last triple crown winner was Justify in 2018, trained by Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith. It won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont stakes.
