There is plenty to learn when the jumpers return to Cheltenham in November. A familiar name might need its first run, while a less exposed rival arrives ready to show what it can do. Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November are the dates for the 2026 meeting, with horse racing odds at BetVictor covering the available races. The form book provides a starting point, but fitness, ground and the final declarations deserve another look before the off.

The campaign is gathering momentum, not winding down. After Cheltenham comes a busy winter, with the spring festivals further ahead. Something you see here may be worth remembering in March; it still needs judging as a November performance first.

Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire hosts all three days. Here is how the weekend is arranged:

Keep an eye on the final programme. Times and supporting races can change, and an old timetable may send you to the wrong contest. The declarations will show which horses are actually due to line up.

Paddy Power Gold Cup

Saturday’s headline race is a Premier Handicap chase over roughly two and a half miles. Look at the weights before making too much of a horse’s reputation. A proven performer can face a stiff task conceding weight to improving rivals.

The name sometimes causes confusion. March’s Cheltenham Gold Cup is a Grade 1 over a longer distance, not this handicap. Check the full race title on the slip if you have searched simply for “Cheltenham Gold Cup”.

In 2025, Panic Attack took the prize with Harry Skelton riding for his brother Dan. That is the result of the last running, not a declaration for the next one.

Greatwood Handicap Hurdle

Sunday switches the spotlight to the hurdlers. The Greatwood is a Premier Handicap over about two miles and half a furlong, where a mistake can cost both momentum and position. Watch how a runner gets from one hurdle to the next, not just how strongly it finishes.

Alexei won in 2025 for Joe Tizzard, with Brendan Powell riding. For the next renewal, look at the runners’ current ratings and recent preparation rather than expecting last year’s race to provide a ready-made answer.

Shloer Chase

The Shloer is a Grade 2 chase over approximately two miles, listed on Friday’s programme. It can bring established chasers back into focus at a point when their fitness and jumping are being tested after time away.

L’Eau Du Sud beat Jonbon in the 2025 running. An early-season meeting between familiar names is not simply a rerun of their previous encounters: preparation, penalties and ground can alter the task in front of them.

Novice Chases and Hurdle Trials

Saturday’s supporting races include the Grade 2 Arkle Trial Novices’ Chase over about two miles and the Grade 2 Triumph Hurdle Trial over roughly two miles and half a furlong. The Triumph trial is for juvenile hurdlers, not inexperienced jockeys.

Friday also features the Grade 2 Hyde Novices’ Hurdle, run under the Albert Bartlett name, over approximately two miles and five furlongs. That is a different race from the longer Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the March Festival.

In a novice race, the label concerns the horse’s eligibility in that discipline. A novice chaser may already have plenty of experience over hurdles, and its jockey may be an established professional.

Check the Supporting Programme

Do not assume every race from an older November schedule will return unchanged. Cross-country racing has featured at this meeting, but the November 2025 contest was cancelled because of unsuitable ground and replaced by a veterans’ chase.

Check the confirmed programme before looking for a particular contest. Changes to race names, sponsors or the running order do not necessarily mean you are viewing the wrong meeting.

The markets available will depend on the race and how close it is to the start. Begin with the selection you actually want to make, then read the conditions attached to it.

Win Betting

A win-only selection needs your horse to win under the applicable settlement rules. Finishing second does not earn a return, however well it ran or how narrow the margin was.

Check the race as carefully as the horse’s name. November cards can contain several similarly named handicap or novice contests, and an ante-post selection may sit separately from the day’s other racing.

Each-Way Betting

Tick each-way and you pay for a place bet alongside the win bet. Each part carries the same stake, so remember to double the amount entered per part when checking your total outlay.

The place terms are not fixed across the meeting. A small-field chase may offer different terms from a competitive handicap hurdle. Read the number of places and the fraction shown for your chosen race before adding the bet.

If the horse places without winning, only the place portion succeeds. That return may not cover the combined stake. Use the each-way bet calculator with the actual market terms if you want to compare the possible outcomes.

Place-Only Markets

With a place-only bet, there is no separate win portion. Your horse must finish within the positions specified by that market.

Do not assume those positions are always first, second and third. Check the advertised places, the price and how any non-runners affect settlement.

Forecasts

A straight forecast asks for the first two horses in the correct order. A reverse forecast covers the same pair finishing first and second either way round, so it contains two bets.

Multiples Across the Meeting

Selections from separate races may be combined in doubles, trebles or accumulators. For a standard win accumulator, every selection must win for the bet to succeed, subject to the rules for void selections and other settlement circumstances.

Adding another race adds another condition. Decide the full stake before confirming, and do not turn a losing single into a larger multiple simply to try to recover the money.

Ante-Post November Meeting Betting

An entry does not guarantee that a horse will run. Its trainer may be waiting for rain, considering another race or checking how the horse recovers from its previous outing.

Under standard ante-post terms, a selection that misses the race normally loses unless an exception in the applicable rules applies. Non-runner no bet protection only applies when explicitly offered for that market. Read the terms rather than assuming every withdrawal produces a refund.

There is a trade-off in waiting. Declarations give a clearer view of the intended field, but the prices may have changed by then. Betting earlier does not automatically mean securing a better price.

Pay attention to the race date and conditions when reviewing an existing ante-post bet. A horse switching targets does not normally move your wager with it.

Fitness After a Break

A long absence is not enough on its own to dismiss a runner. Some horses perform well fresh; others improve considerably after their first outing of the campaign.

Look at previous seasonal returns and the trainer’s recent comments where available. Then compare that evidence with rivals who have already raced. A recent win may indicate fitness, but you still need to examine the quality of the opposition.

Jumping, Ground and Distance

Watch the jumping as well as the finishing effort. A horse that repeatedly loses momentum at its obstacles may find it harder to recover when the pace increases.

The going matters too. Compare recent performances on similar ground, and revisit that assessment if the forecast changes. Staying the distance on a quick surface does not settle the question of stamina in more testing conditions.

Previous Cheltenham form is useful, but check which course, trip and race conditions produced it. A familiar venue does not make every contest the same test.

Handicap Marks and Rider Claims

In handicaps, compare the current mark with the one from the horse’s previous runs. An improved performance may have brought a rise in the weights, changing the task next time.

Where a rider is permitted to claim a weight allowance, read the amount shown on the card. That allowance is only one factor; it does not make a horse better treated automatically or replace the need to assess its form.

Some races are restricted to amateur or conditional jockeys. Read the race conditions rather than confusing those restrictions with the separate rules for novice horses.

Recent editions have had selected races on ITV and wider coverage on Racing TV. Check the broadcasters’ 2026 listings nearer the meeting for the exact channels, races and programme times.
