The Grand National is one of the most iconic horse races. Taking place at Aintree Racecourse on Merseyside annually, the race has been going since 1839 and is a steeplechase run over a distance of four miles and two and a half furlongs, roughly. The runners will make two laps of the course and jump a total of thirty fences.
As far as jump races go, the Grand National is the richest, with a prize fund of £1,000,000, with at least half of that going to the winner. What makes the Grand National unique is that casual fans of the sport will search out horse racing betting odds for the Grand National, and it may be the only bet they have on horse racing all year.
The Grand National takes place on the final day of a three-day festival at Aintree Racecourse. The race is always held in April, which is the month after the Cheltenham Festival, which takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse in March.
Now one of the most anticipated races in the world is almost here again. The Grand National is set to get underway on Saturday the 5th of April at 4:00 pm GMT. This year's iteration of the race will feature 34 runners, with the best horses, trainers, and jockeys from around the UK going toe-to-toe for the ultimate prize in horse racing.

As one of the most popular horse races to bet on in the sport, here are the major markets for the race.
As mentioned above, a lot of people only bet on one horse race a year, and that’s the Grand National. So, they will, more often than not, back a horse to win. Because the race has so many runners in it and is such a test over a long distance with thirty jumps, it means even the favourite to win is usually available at big odds. Last year’s winner, Corach Rambler, was available at odds of 8/1 ahead of the race.
Again, because of the challenge the Grand National poses and how big the field is. And because the odds are generally high enough. Some punters will look to bet on horses each way, which means that they ideally win but just need to place, usually in the first four. An each-way bet is often considered a safer bet because it gives bettors more options to win something. In the Grand National, it’s also possible for a horse at a huge price to place, such as Santini at 33-1 in 2022.
Forecast betting is another popular type of bet where the Grand National is concerned, probably because of the big prices that are available. A forecast would mean predicting the winner and second in order, or if going with a reverse forecast, in any order. It would have meant predicting Corach Rambler, the favourite, and Vanillier, a 20/1 shot, to come first and second in 2023 if going with a straight forecast.

The first legend to win the Grand National at 100/1 odds was Tipperary Tim in 1928 and the most recent was Mon Mome in 2009, who led with a 12 length victory, beating Comply or Die and My Will - a shock to spectators and bettors a like.
Below is a look at the current Grand National betting favourites, with odds for each being available from within our extensive sportsbook!
I Am Maximus enters the 2025 Grand National as the defending champion. This impressive nine-year-old, trained by Willie Mullins, claimed victory in the 2024 race and now returns to try and do the double, etching himself into Grand National history in the process.
As for his recent form, it sits at 311-P8m, showing that I Am Maximus has had mixed results since his Grand National triumph last year.
This nine-year-old racehorse, trained by Willie Mullins, has shown promise with a form of 1-P625. His second-place finish in the Irish Gold Cup proves his ability to compete at high levels, however, the Grand National will be more testing on the horse's stamina.
This seven-year-old horse has shown promising form (2-2F42) under the guidance of trainers Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero. Iroko has proven his resilience by bouncing back strongly after a fall at Ascot, with the Grand National being a race that could certainly play to his strengths.
This 8-year-old horse boasts an impressive form of 73-411, showing his racing consistency. Trained by the renowned Willie Mullins, Nick Rockett has achieved back-to-back wins with jockey Paul Townend in the saddle, although it's likely that Patrick Mullins will ride this horse in the Grand National, according to Willie himself.
This eight-year-old thoroughbred has shown great form with an impressive record of 286411. Trained by Gavin Cromwell, Perceval Legallois has built a strong reputation on the racecourse with back-to-back wins at Leopardstown.
Experts who were watching his recent performances will be confident that this horse has what it takes to compete with the other Grand National betting favourites, as Perceval Legallois looks to be the full package when it comes to trickier steeplechase events.
Red Rum was the last top-weighted horse to win the Grand National, way back in 1974. Don't forget to take weight into consideration when choosing your bet.
In the past 25 years, the favourite (or JF) has only won the Grand National five times, so look beyond the favourite when making your pick. You'll also get better odds on an E/W bet if your horse places.
