Melbourne Cup Odds

The Melbourne Cup is the premier horse racing event in Australia, known as 'The race that stops a nation' due to country-wide interest. It's comparable to the Grand National in the United Kingdom, or the Kentucky Derby over in the United States, with millions of spectators watching the race live. The Melbourne Cup also has a long and storied history, dating back to 1861, when Archer managed to win first place from a total of 17 different runners.  

It's run on the first Tuesday of November every year, meaning that the 2024 iteration of the race is scheduled for the 5th of November at 4:00 am UK time (BST). The race has a distance of 3200 metres, or 1.99 miles, with only three-year-olds and older being eligible to enter.

What are Melbourne Cup betting markets?

Outright Winner

As the name suggests, the outright winner involves picking the horse you think will cross the finish line first. This bet will only be a successful one if your horse finishes first, with 2nd, 3rd, and onwards being marked as a loss.  

Each Way

The Each Way bet is an extension of the outright bet, allowing you to double your stake size in order to cover extra positions. If the horse finishes in the stated position, the each way portion of the bet will be awarded at a fraction of the original odds. This will also apply if the horse wins the race, however, this will be added to the outright part of the bet, which will be awarded at the stated odds.  

Place Betting

With a place bet, you can cover multiple places without needing to place an outright wager as well. For example, you can pick a horse to finish in the top 3 places. Keep in mind that all of these places will award at the same odds, meaning that if the chosen horse finishes in 1st place, the potential winnings will be the same as if the horse crosses the line in third.

  • Straight Forecast - This bet involves predicting the horses that will finish in first and second position.  
  • Trifecta - A trifecta bet is similar to a straight forecast. However, it involves picking one more position. This means that you must successfully predict the horses that finish first, second, and third, all in the correct order.  
  • Head-to-head - With a head-to-head bet, you are backing one horse to finish before another, regardless of their respective positions.
