There is even more movement at the bottom. The last four clubs drop into League Two, meaning 20th is safe and 21st is not. That broad relegation zone can keep a large group under pressure well beyond the winter.

Seven teams leave League One in a normal season and seven arrive. Results from the Championship and League Two therefore reshape the outright picture every summer.

An outright selection is settled by something that happens across the competition rather than in one particular fixture. It may remain open from pre-season until May.

The League One winner market asks which club will finish above the other 23. Promotion offers several routes, while top-two, top-six and top-half bets focus solely on final league position. Relegation and top goalscorer markets follow separate contests at opposite ends of the campaign.

League One Winner Odds

Second place is not enough here. The backed team must finish top after 46 games and be crowned champion.

There is time to recover from a poor week, but the long schedule tests more than the strongest starting XI. Look for cover through the spine of the side. A club short of options in goal, central defence or up front may struggle once Saturday and Tuesday fixtures begin to pile up.

The winner market may include each-way terms. An each-way bet divides the stake between a win part and a place part, using the fraction and number of paid places displayed with that market. Check those conditions before confirming because they can change.

League One Promotion Betting

A promotion selection has three possible routes. It can win the league, finish second or survive the play-offs.

That makes it broader than title betting. A club could sit outside the automatic positions all season and still land the wager at Wembley. The trade-off is obvious: finishing between third and sixth adds two difficult ties after the 46-game programme.

Top Two Finish

Top-two odds concern automatic promotion only. First or second completes the selection; going up through the play-offs does not.

Top Six Finish

A final position from first to sixth wins a top-six bet. The selected club does not need to take part in the play-offs, because finishing first or second also satisfies the market.

Nor does a side finishing third to sixth have to reach Wembley. Once the regular-season table is final, its work for this wager is done. Promotion betting is the separate option when the end result must be a place in the Championship.

Top 12 Finish

The top half of a 24-club division ends at 12th. This market can suit a view that a team will improve without asking it to mount a promotion campaign.

There is no allowance for being close. A club in 13th loses the selection even when goal difference is all that separates it from the team above.

League One Top Goalscorer

This market follows individual league goals through the regular campaign. Domestic cup and play-off goals are not normally included unless the displayed rules state otherwise.

Before choosing a striker, look at likely minutes, injury history and penalty responsibility. Service matters too. A capable finisher cannot score chances that his team never creates.

Transfers create another complication. A forward may leave the division in January or lose his place after a new signing arrives. Dead-heat rules are worth checking in case two players finish level.

Bottom Four Finish

League One’s four relegation places are 21st through 24th. A bottom-four selection succeeds when the chosen team ends in any of those positions.

Promoted sides often attract early attention, but writing off all four newcomers is too simple. Their recruitment, budgets and playing styles will differ. An established League One club can be pulled into the same fight after losing key players or beginning badly.

Points deductions may also affect the final table. Financial and disciplinary decisions belong in the research alongside form on the pitch.

Bromley won the League Two title, with MK Dons and Cambridge taking the other automatic places. Notts County completed the group at Wembley, beating Salford City 3-0 in the play-off final.

That creates a varied set of newcomers. Some are trying to halt a slide, while others arrive with the confidence of promotion. Neither direction settles where they will finish next.

Lincoln City became 2025/26 champions and Cardiff City followed them into the Championship automatically. Bolton Wanderers took the longer route, beating Stockport County in the play-off final.

Exeter City, Port Vale, Rotherham United and Northampton Town occupied the bottom four and moved into League Two.

The recent champions before Lincoln were Birmingham City in 2024/25, Portsmouth in 2023/24, Plymouth Argyle in 2022/23, Wigan Athletic in 2021/22 and Hull City in 2020/21. Each winner disappeared into the Championship the following season, keeping the League One title race fresh.

Begin with squad depth. A busy run can force changes in several positions, especially when the league schedule overlaps with the FA Cup, League Cup and EFL Trophy.

Next, split home performances from away ones. A contender that controls matches at its own ground may look very different when asked to break down a compact side on the road.

Do not treat the scoreline as the whole performance. Narrow wins built on repeatable chance creation are more encouraging than victories rescued by unsustainable finishing or a goalkeeper repeatedly bailing the team out.
