Hard-court form during the North American swing gives a useful starting point. It can reveal who has found their timing on the surface. There is another side to it, though: a player who goes deep every week may reach New York with a lot of tennis already in their legs.

The draw matters too. Two leading contenders in the same quarter cannot both reach the semi-finals. Look for possible early meetings, awkward unseeded opponents and players returning from injury.
