Royal Ascot remains the richest racing meeting in British horse racing. The meeting takes place over five days – Tuesday to Saturday – at the iconic Ascot Racecourse in Ascot, England, around an hour outside of London. Across the five days of racing in 2026, there will be a total of thirty-five races, with the pick of the action being Thursday’s Ascot Gold Cup. Thursday is the meeting’s most famous and popular day.
Because of Ascot’s royal connections, and more specifically, the prestige of Royal Ascot, every day of the meeting begins with a royal procession, where members of the Royal Family in attendance will arrive. As Britain’s richest race meeting, Royal Ascot attracts leading flat horses, with Group 1 races and millions of pounds in prize money to be won.
Popular Races
As the crown jewel in the British flat racing calendar, Royal Ascot hosts a number of iconic races that draw global attention every June. Among those is the prestigious Ascot Gold Cup, run on Ladies’ Day (Thursday), which is the highlight for stayers over two and a half miles. Its winners often become household names, with legends like Stradivarius and Yeats achieving multiple victories.
The Queen Anne Stakes, which traditionally kicks off the five-day meeting on Tuesday, is another fans’ favourite. A Group 1 mile contest for older horses, it’s another race that has a history of producing star performances from top milers such as Frankel. Also, on Tuesday is the King’s Stand Stakes, now the King Charles III Stakes, a five-furlong sprint that attracts elite-level speedsters from around the world.
On Saturday, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, now the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, stands out as one of the top sprint races of the season, often featuring strong international contenders.
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday is also a hugely anticipated race, with high-quality middle-distance horses lining up for a crack at Group 1 glory. Collectively, these races embody Royal Ascot’s rich tradition, top-tier competition, and appeal for punters, owners, and racegoers alike.
