So, where do Newcastle fit this season? That is tougher to judge than it was a year ago.

Twelfth place in 2025/26 pulled expectations back towards earth. Then came the summer rebuild. Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier have gone, leaving Jaissle with a very different dressing room.

Never say never? Fine. The evidence still makes a title look like a long shot.

Newcastle know what a challenge feels like. Keegan's entertainers nearly pulled it off in the 1990s. Howe's best Newcastle side came fourth in 2022/23. Jaissle, though, starts with a side being pieced back together.

Isak left for Liverpool in 2025. Tonali, Guimaraes and Gordon followed him out a year later. Between them, those players supplied goals, control and personality. Replacing names on a team sheet is one thing; replacing their influence is another.

No European schedule gives the new manager breathing room. St James' Park can still make life miserable for visiting teams, too. A push towards the European places is believable if the newcomers settle. Going all the way would require that rebuild to work almost immediately.

The Isak saga swallowed much of Newcastle's summer. By the time his move to Liverpool was completed, the squad looked unbalanced and the league campaign had already begun. One win and three goals from the opening six matches told the story.

For a while, things clicked. Late November through January brought Newcastle's best run. Then it faded. The final line read 12th and 49 points: 14 wins, seven draws, 17 losses. That was their lowest league position under Howe.

The table was bad. Losing twice to Sunderland felt worse. The promoted Black Cats took both derbies, even the one at St James' Park. Nobody on Tyneside needs reminding how those afternoons felt.

At least Europe gave supporters a few nights to enjoy. The Champions League lasted until the last 16. Barcelona took it from there, winning 8-3 on aggregate. Camp Nou supplied the ugly part: 7-2 on the night. Getting that far still gave the travelling support something from the season.

Manchester City closed the other two routes to a trophy. Fifth round in the FA Cup. Semi-finals in the EFL Cup. City stopped them both times.

July brought the end for Howe, just short of five years after he arrived. He left behind a Champions League campaign and, above all, that 2025 EFL Cup. Whatever went wrong last season, that is quite a legacy for Jaissle to follow.

Forget a quiet refresh. Newcastle's 2026 summer was open-heart surgery.

Dedic already knows Jaissle, having played under him earlier in his career. That familiarity should make one transition easier. The rest of the squad will be learning the coach's high-energy, vertical approach together.

Plenty of potential has arrived. So has risk. Several recruits are young, while the footballers leaving knew the Premier League inside out. The door had not quite shut when this was written, so the list may yet grow.

Newcastle's story did not begin with the 2021 takeover. Not even close.

The club grew from Stanley FC, which became Newcastle East End. In 1892, East End took on the assets of Newcastle West End and adopted the Newcastle United name. St James' Park has remained home ever since.

The first golden period arrived before the Second World War. Between 1905 and 1927 came four league championships. The first of their six FA Cups arrived in 1910. Different eras gave Tyneside Milburn, Keegan and Shearer. Nobody has scored more for Newcastle than Shearer.

Then came the wait. After the 1955 FA Cup, the domestic cabinet stayed untouched for 70 years. Howe's players finally opened it again by beating Liverpool at Wembley in 2025.

Seventy years explains the tears in the stands that day. Support did not disappear through relegations, unpopular ownership or near misses. Money changed what people expect from Newcastle, but it did not create the bond between the club and the city.

The jump from 11th to fourth showed how quickly a season can change on Tyneside. The fall from fifth to 12th did the same thing in reverse. Newcastle are not an easy team to place before Jaissle has managed a competitive game.
