Nobody much mourned the old diet of international friendlies. The Nations League gave those autumn dates a purpose: a trophy at the top, movement between divisions below it and danger attached to a bad week.

This will be the fifth Nations League. It involves 54 countries, sorted into four levels named A to D. League A is where the title is decided; elsewhere, climbing a level or avoiding the drop is the immediate concern.

Most of the structure is pleasingly straightforward. Leagues A, B and C contain four groups, with four countries in each. Everyone in those divisions gets three opponents and meets each one home and away. The six League D nations are divided between two smaller groups.

The first ball is kicked on 24 September 2026. By 17 November, the league phase will be done. It is not a campaign that allows much time for recovery, particularly as the opening four matchdays are squeezed into the long autumn window.

For those in League A, second is good enough. The top pair from every group enter March’s two-legged quarter-finals. Four winners then head for the finals between 9 and 13 June 2027.

Results matter throughout the pyramid. Group positions determine direct promotion and relegation, with play-offs settling several of the remaining moves. That is why a League C fixture can carry every bit as much tension as a contest between two title contenders.

These are the four groups whose teams can become European champions:

A3 looks unforgiving. Spain have played in three finals on the spin, Croatia reached the 2023 decider and England will expect to challenge. One of that trio may be watching the quarter-finals from home.

The holders do not have a free pass either. Portugal must deal with Norway’s firepower, Denmark’s tournament know-how and a Wales side that can be stubborn on home soil.

The UEFA Nations League winner market asks one question: who will hold the trophy in June? Getting through the group is merely the beginning. A winning selection still has to survive a quarter-final over two legs and then take two more knockout matches in five days.

Other outright options may appear as the competition develops:

• Group winner: Pick the country that will finish at the summit of its section.
• To qualify: Choose who progresses from a group or knockout tie.
• Promotion: Back a lower-league nation to move up.
• Relegation: Predict which team will fall into the division below.
• Each-way: Place separate win and place parts under the terms displayed.
• Top goalscorer: Select the player who ends the tournament with most goals.

One small distinction can completely change a bet. Match-result markets are normally settled after 90 minutes, while a team-to-qualify selection can continue through extra time and penalties. Always let the wording on the market settle the question.

Spain, France, Germany and England occupy much of the early conversation around the Nations League winner odds. Each has a strong squad. Each also has at least one troublesome neighbour in the draw.

Spain’s recent record is hard to ignore. Champions in 2023, they were twice ahead in the 2025 final before Portugal dragged the game to penalties. England and Croatia now stand between them and another knockout appearance.

France have Italy and Belgium in A1, plus a Türkiye team that nobody will relish visiting. Germany’s biggest group game is likely to be against the Netherlands, although Serbia and Greece cannot be treated as convenient points.

England are still waiting for their first Nations League final. They finished third at the inaugural tournament, then failed to match it. Beginning the new campaign in Spain is a demanding test, but September rarely supplies the last word on an international side.

And the champions? Portugal have lifted two of the four Nations League trophies, including the first in 2019. Their 2025 success proved they could live with Spain’s possession and still find a way through a close final. Becoming the first country to retain the title is now the challenge.

Croatia, Italy and the Netherlands belong in the discussion as well. Knockout know-how counts for plenty when the entire season offers only six group games and no long run in which to repair an ugly start.

Spain struck first in Munich through Martín Zubimendi. Nuno Mendes answered, Mikel Oyarzabal restored the lead and Cristiano Ronaldo pulled Portugal level again after half-time. From there, the scoreboard refused to move.

The shootout did. Diogo Costa denied Álvaro Morata and Portugal converted every kick they took, with Rúben Neves supplying the last one. A 2-2 draw became a 5-3 Portuguese victory on penalties.

Portugal therefore sit alone on two titles. Spain and France have one each. The other previous finals ended with Spain beating Croatia on penalties in 2023, France edging Spain 2-1 in 2021 and Portugal defeating the Netherlands 1-0 in 2019.

The draw comes first. Spain and England have less breathing room in A3 than a leading nation with a softer route to the first two places.

Next comes availability. International managers cannot buy a replacement when a key player is injured, and one club problem can rule somebody out for an entire window. Check the actual squad, then check it again when the starting eleven arrives.

The calendar adds another wrinkle. Four rounds take place in quick succession at the beginning of the competition. Fresh legs, sensible rotation and the depth of a country’s bench may tell us more than a star-studded first eleven.

Three home games do not leave scope to waste many points. Nor should goal difference be dismissed in a short group, especially when several contenders are capable of finishing level.

Looking at the overall champion? Think beyond November. The winning nation will need enough depth for two quarter-final legs and a pair of June knockout games separated by only a few days.
