Tyson Fury fights tend to become travelling soap operas. Venues change, retirement claims appear, promoters argue and the opponent sometimes feels like the least complicated part.

Not this time. There is a poster. There is a stadium. Fury will face Anthony Joshua in Cardiff on 11 December 2026.

He arrives with 36 wins, two losses and a draw. Twenty-five of those victories ended early. The record also contains three Wilder fights, two Usyk defeats and that unforgettable night against Wladimir Klitschko. Plenty to pick apart, then, before anybody chooses a side.

Friday feels odd for an event of this size. It is official, though.

What nobody has confirmed is the start time. A very late ring walk has been discussed because Netflix will want a sizeable US audience. For now, anything beyond “TBC” is still guesswork.

Fury is the favourite at the time of writing. Fair enough. He is enormous, difficult to read and rather good at turning a fight into the sort of mess only he understands.

The jab is likely to be central. If Fury can touch Joshua from range and smother him up close, AJ may struggle to put combinations together. The stance switches create another irritation. Joshua likes a clear target; Fury rarely volunteers to be one.

Yet Joshua owns the more obvious one-punch threat. Give him room to set his feet and that right hand can undo a careful game plan in seconds. Fury has made a career out of getting off the canvas, which is admirable, although being knocked down by AJ would be a poor way to test the habit again.

Five years ago this debate was cleaner. Since then, both have lost, vanished for stretches and added some hard miles. The old footage explains why they became stars. It cannot tell us exactly what remains.

The tidy Fury plan is a points win. Long jab, broken rhythm, plenty of clinching and very few moments where Joshua can plant both feet. It may not look spectacular every minute. Fury will not care.

AJ is chasing the ugly moment that ends the conversation. Eight neat rounds are optional if his right hand lands flush. Fury knows all about getting off the floor, but there are only so many times a heavyweight can make that trick work.

Both men bring doubts. Usyk beat Joshua twice and later beat Fury twice. Dubois knocked AJ out at Wembley. Fury laboured against Francis Ngannou and went through three punishing contests with Wilder.

There is a sensible favourite, in other words, but not an invulnerable one. That is a much better fight than the prices alone might suggest.

Fury’s last appearance came inside a Thai kickboxing venue. Quite a jump from a roofed stadium holding more than 70,000 people.

Mariusz Wach met him in Pattaya on 24 July 2026. The Polish veteran had been selected to provide rounds, and he managed seven. Fury jabbed, swapped stances and gradually turned up the pressure until Wach’s corner stopped it before the eighth.

Nobody will place that win beside Klitschko or Wilder. It served its purpose. Fury got through another camp and added activity following his April points victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov.

Joshua nearly ruined everything the following evening. Kristian Prenga dropped him twice in the opening round before AJ recovered and knocked him out in the second. For about three minutes, Fury vs Joshua looked cursed all over again.

Both escaped. Cardiff survived.

Usyk accounts for both defeats. The draw came against Wilder in 2018, on the night Fury somehow climbed up from that famous twelfth-round knockdown.

Düsseldorf was the breakthrough. Fury went to Germany in 2015 and made a dominant champion look completely lost. Klitschko could not find his rhythm, Fury took the decision and three heavyweight belts travelled back to Britain.

Then his career disappeared for almost three years.

Wilder dragged it back into focus. Fury outboxed the American for long periods in their first meeting, got flattened late and rose before the count. The draw demanded a rematch. Fury attacked the puncher in the second bout and stopped him in seven.

Their third meeting was wonderfully ridiculous. Both men hit the floor. Both looked exhausted. Fury eventually ended it in round eleven.

Usyk later found answers nobody else had. The Ukrainian won their first fight by split decision and took the rematch unanimously. No unbeaten record, no belt and no excuse. Fury now has a different prize in front of him: beating the British rival whose name has followed his for a decade.
