The standard Ante and Play rules are easy enough once the dealer qualification is clear.

If the dealer has less than Queen-high, they do not qualify. In the standard game, the Ante is paid at even money while the Play bet is returned.

If the dealer has Queen-high or better, the two hands are compared. A higher-ranking player hand wins both the Ante and Play bets at even money, while a stronger dealer hand loses both wagers. An exact tie normally results in both bets being returned.

Three Card Poker uses familiar poker combinations, but there’s an important difference from traditional five-card poker: a straight ranks above a flush. With only three cards in play, making a straight is statistically less common.

The Ante bet starts the standard game. Once the cards have been dealt, you then decide whether to fold or place the Play bet.

The Play wager must normally match the value of your Ante. So, if your Ante was £2, continuing with the hand would require another £2 Play bet.

Folding ends your involvement in that round and the Ante is lost. Choosing Play keeps you in for the showdown against the dealer.

Some versions of Live Three Card Poker also include optional side bets. Pair Plus is one of the best-known examples and is based entirely on the strength of your own three cards rather than whether you beat the dealer. Other tables may include additional bonus bets, so check the paytable before playing.

There aren’t dozens of decisions to memorise, which is one reason Three Card Poker is relatively easy to learn.

For the standard Ante and Play game, the commonly used basic strategy is to Play with Queen-6-4 or better and fold hands below Queen-6-4. That means Q-7-2 would be played, whereas Q-6-3 would normally be folded.

That rule applies specifically to the main Ante/Play decision. Optional side bets work differently and have their own probabilities and payouts.

No Three Card Poker strategy guarantees a winning result. Each deal remains uncertain, and a sensible decision can still lose to a stronger dealer hand.
