Golden Retriever Slot Game Review

This slot does not leave us guessing about its star. A smiling dog sits beside the reels, surrounded by treats, toys and an open countryside. Reel Kingdom developed the game in partnership with Pragmatic Play, using a familiar five-reel format with ten fixed paylines. They saved the more interesting ideas of this release for the bonus round. Once enough Scatters land, a wheel chooses between collecting Bonus Spins and a Hold & Spin feature. We think that split gives this one a little more to chase than its friendly appearance initially suggests.

Theme & Graphic

One word perfectly describes this setting, and that word is ‘peaceful.’ We are spending the day in a sunny field, with trees, distant hills and a blue sky filling the background. Long grass and small flowers frame the bottom of the screen, while the golden retriever waits to the left of the grid. The dog moves, tilts its head and reacts to certain moments without taking our attention away from the symbols. Everything on the reels belongs to a well-stocked dog basket. There is a rope toy, football, bag of treats, food bowl and padded bed, followed by colourful card symbols. The rounded artwork has a clean cartoon finish, and the red frame looks a little like a fenced play area. Hold & Spin changes the layout more noticeably, replacing the ordinary reels with separate spaces for Coin symbols. Larger potential wins use short animations built around bones and bold lettering.

Payout Table

The values below show base bet multipliers, so they remain useful regardless of the selected stake.

10 N/A, 0.40x, 2x, 10x
J N/A, 0.40x, 2x, 10x
Q N/A, 0.40x, 2x, 10x
K N/A, 1x, 4x, 20x
A N/A, 1x, 4x, 20x
Dog Bowl N/A, 1x, 5x, 20x
Rope Toy N/A, 2x, 10x, 50x
Football N/A, 2x, 10x, 50x
Bag of Dog Treats N/A, 3x, 15x, 100x
Dog Bed 0.40x, 5x, 20x, 200x

The golden retriever itself appears as the Wild. We only see it during Bonus Spins, where it can land on any reel and replace the regular paying symbols. It cannot take the place of a Scatter or Money symbol.

A doghouse acts as the Scatter and may appear anywhere on the grid. Three or more Scatters send us to the bonus randomizer. The regular dog bowl is a standard paying symbol, while its Money version can carry a printed value of up to x500. These values are collected by Wilds during Bonus Spins.

Bonus Features

Scatter Transformations

Two Scatters are not always the end of the story. When exactly two appear in the base game, Golden Retriever can change one, two or three existing symbols into extra Scatters. If the transformation raises the total to at least three, the bonus round starts. The grid pauses while the dog watches the possible conversion, giving an otherwise unsuccessful pair of Scatters another chance to develop.

Bonus Game Randomizer

Three, four or five Scatters activate a wheel before the main feature begins. We cannot choose the result. Instead, the pointer lands on either Bonus Spins or Hold & Spin. The number of Scatters still matters after the wheel has made its decision. More Scatters mean a larger opening allocation of Bonus Spins or a stronger reserved multiplier in Hold & Spin.

Bonus Spins

Three Scatters correspond to 10 Bonus Spins, four provide 15 and five provide 20. Wild symbols enter the reels for this part of the game, and each one collects the value from every Money symbol visible on the same spin. The Wild also has a backup effect. If at least one Wild lands and no Money symbols are present anywhere on the grid, the game may add Money symbols to random positions. We can therefore still receive a collection even when the reels initially stop without a valued bowl.

Wilds are tracked above the grid throughout the round. Every fourth collected Wild adds another 10 spins, but these extra spins wait until the current group has finished. The first retrigger applies an x2 win multiplier. A second raises it to x5, while the third and final retrigger takes it to x10. No more retriggers are available once that third stage has been reached.

Win Fetch

Win Fetch accompanies the first retrigger. Before the next group of spins starts, one random payline is selected and every position along it changes into the same paying symbol. Since the chosen line already follows a valid payline pattern, the transformation can form a full five-symbol combination. The resulting value still depends on which regular symbol is selected.

Can’t Lick It

The second retrigger activates Can’t Lick It. This time, a random number of positions change into copies of one paying symbol. Unlike Win Fetch, the transformed positions do not have to follow one complete payline. Their usefulness depends on where they appear and whether they connect with matching symbols already on the reels.

Can You Dig It

The third retrigger has its own final trick. Can You Dig It changes random positions into groups containing three Money values, then collects those amounts immediately. Each generated value can be x1, x2, x3, x5, x10, x20, x50 or x100. This modifier takes place before the last retriggered group begins, and there is no fourth modifier waiting beyond it.

Hold & Spin

The other possible result from the bonus wheel is Hold & Spin. Ordinary reel symbols disappear, leaving a grid of blank positions and sticky Coins. A random number of Coins are already present when the round opens, and we begin with three respins. Any new Coin locks into place and puts the counter back to three. When no respins remain, the game adds together all visible Coin values. Individual Coins can be worth x0.40, x1, x2, x4 or x10. A reserved multiplier sits above the grid, although it only applies when Coins cover all 15 spaces. Three triggering Scatters set this multiplier at x1, four begin at x3 and five begin at x10.

Filling every position multiplies the combined Coin total by that reserved value. The screen then clears, several new Coins are placed and another set of respins begins with a higher reserved multiplier. The possible restart multipliers are x2, x3, x5, x10 and x25, with the next value always higher than the current one. Once x25 is reached, it remains active for any further restarts during the same feature.

Spin Mechanics

Golden Retriever keeps the main game compact with five reels, three rows and ten fixed paylines. Matching symbols must start on the first reel and continue across neighbouring reels from left to right. The game counts the highest winning combination on each active line, then combines potential payouts from separate lines. Much of the base game is deliberately uncomplicated. There are no changing reel sizes or symbol cascades to follow, making it one of the simpler casino games available today in terms of payout mechanics. We are mainly watching for regular line combinations and Scatters, including the occasional transformation from a two Scatter result. The structure becomes busier after the bonus wheel appears. Bonus Spins revolve around Wild and Money collections, while Hold & Spin swaps the paylines for locked Coin values.

BetVictor’s Opinion

At first glance, we expected Golden Retriever to lean almost entirely on its canine theme. The artwork certainly does its share of the work, but the choice between two bonus formats is what keeps the game from feeling too slight. We particularly like the way Bonus Spins change after each group of four Wilds. The named modifiers are easy to understand, and each one handles the grid differently. Hold & Spin is more conventional. Its escalating reserved multiplier gives us a reason to watch for a full screen, though the round is otherwise a straightforward Coin collection feature. The base game could also use another idea beyond the Scatter conversion. Even so, we think the uncomplicated paylines and cheerful setting will suit those who prefer online slots with familiar mechanics and a few changes waiting deeper in the bonus round.
