Old Trafford looked headed for a pretty miserable season for a while. Then January changed the whole thing. Ruben Amorim left, Michael Carrick stepped in, and United suddenly had a bit of momentum about them again. By the end of the campaign they were third on 71 points, which had felt a long way off a few months earlier.
The turnaround wasn’t subtle either. United won 12 of their last 17 league games, so this wasn’t a case of drifting into the top four through other teams slipping up. They took 20 wins from the season overall, scored 69 goals and finished back in the Champions League places. That’s a decent recovery by any standard.
Bruno Fernandes drove most of it. His 21 Premier League assists set a new competition record, which says plenty on its own. Further forward, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo both ended their first league campaigns at the club with 11 goals. Not spectacular numbers, maybe, but enough to give United more than one route to a result.
That’s why 2026/27 feels quite interesting. The emergency feeling has gone. Now the question is whether Carrick can turn that late-season surge into something steadier over 38 matches. Clean sheets, goals conceded and results against the strongest sides should be among the more telling Manchester United stats.
