Brighton’s 2025/26 season had a fairly ugly middle and a very useful ending. Fabian Hürzeler’s side won just once across one 13-match stretch, yet recovered well enough to finish eighth on 53 points and secure a return to European football. Four top-half finishes in five years is starting to look more like a habit than a purple patch.
The defence did a lot of the heavy lifting. Brighton conceded 46 league goals, 13 fewer than the previous campaign, with only Arsenal and Manchester City allowing fewer. Bart Verbruggen had an excellent year behind them too, while Brighton actually led the Premier League for high turnovers with 192.
Goals came from almost everywhere. Nineteen different players found the net, the highest total in the division, even though Danny Welbeck’s 13 made him the club’s clear leading league scorer. His departure leaves a rather obvious hole, but Brighton weren’t exactly a one-man attack to begin with.
That makes their 2026/27 numbers particularly interesting. Hürzeler has already shown he can build a strong pressing side, so the bigger question is what happens in front of goal. Georginio Rutter, Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and the rest may need to share Welbeck’s missing output between them.
