Chelsea’s 2025/26 season produced a strange set of numbers. They scored 58 Premier League goals and finished with a positive goal difference, yet still ended up 10th on 52 points. Fourteen wins, ten draws and 14 defeats summed up a side that could look convincing one week and strangely vulnerable the next.
The bigger problem was holding onto good positions. Chelsea dropped 17 points from winning situations at Stamford Bridge alone, more than any other Premier League team. That probably explains their final position better than the attacking figures do. Too many promising afternoons simply got away from them.
Joao Pedro was one player who rarely disappointed. His first full campaign brought 15 league goals and five assists, giving him 20 goal involvements, while Chelsea named him their Player of the Season. Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez both reached double figures for league goals too, so there was hardly a shortage of attacking quality.
Xabi Alonso therefore arrives with something fairly tangible to fix. Chelsea again had the Premier League’s youngest average starting XI, at 24 years and 194 days, but youth only explains so much. Turning more leads into wins should matter far more in 2026/27 than simply producing prettier possession numbers.
