Competitive cycling is gruelling, exciting and packed full of feats of human sporting excellence. When it comes to road cycling, the Tour de France might be the biggest name, but it’s no means the only important race in the calendar. Road cycling has three Grand Tours. The Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España. With each tour lasting a gruelling three weeks, there’s plenty of thrills, spills, crashes, climbs and sprints along the way.
On top of that, there’s also cycling’s one-day classics, including Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders.
But the cycling action doesn’t begin and end with road racing. For the Olympics and World Championships, we’ll be travelling inside the velodrome with events including Omnium, Madison, Team Pursuit, Keirin and Time Trial.
The first competitive cycling event was a 1,200 metre race held in 1868 at the Parc of Saint-Cloud, Paris and was won by an Englishman, Dr. James Moore and his bicycle with solid rubber tyres.
The Tour de France was first founded in 1903 as the “race to end all races” taking over from the previous city to city road races held across Europe, as the premier cycling event. Unsurprisingly, France and Belgium dominated the tour in its early years with a few Italian cyclists also breaking through.
Spanish dominance began in the early 90s, to be followed by total US dominance from the late 90s, which was later overshadowed by the Lance Armstrong controversy. Great Britain and Team Sky have been the ones to beat in recent Tours, with Chris Froome taking the yellow jersey three times in a row, as well as a win apiece from Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas.
Inside the velodrome, it was all about Team GB at Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016 with 19 gold medals on the track across the three Olympic Games.
At BetVictor, we’ll have a range of cycling bets on offer from the Olympics and World Championships. You can also enjoy In-Play markets along with outright Betting markets for the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana and all the one-day classics throughout the cycling calendar.
