The Cheltenham Festival is an iconic National Hunt horse racing meeting that takes place annually at Cheltenham Racecourse, located in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The four-day festival, which happens in March each year, has prize money that is only bettered by the Grand National.
The Cheltenham Festival hosts multiple Grade 1 races across the four days of the meeting, including the legendary Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase, and the Stayers’ Hurdle.
At present, seven races take place on each of the four days of the festival, resulting in twenty-eight races in total. The Friday of the festival is the most popular because Friday is Gold Cup day, and the Gold Cup is the most illustrious race of the entire meeting.
The Cheltenham Festival is often considered a battle between the British and the Irish. Irish trainers, such as Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott, bring over their horses to compete at Cheltenham, and it’s been over a decade since a British trainer has had the most winners at the festival.
With hundreds of millions of pounds wagered across the Cheltenham Festival, there are plenty of popular markets offering horse racing betting odds for the meeting.
The Gold Cup is, without doubt, the most popular betting market where the Cheltenham Festival is concerned. The Cheltenham Gold Cup takes place on the Friday of the meeting, and the reigning champion is Willie Mullins-trained Galopin Des Champs. Galopin Des Champs is the current favourite to win the 2026 Gold Cup, but odds and runners are subject to change until entries are confirmed.
The Champion Hurdle takes place on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, and it makes up the last leg of the iconic Triple Crown. It runs over two miles and a half a furlong and is open to horses ages four years and over. Constitution Hill went off as the odds-on favourite in the 2023 Champion Hurdle and won the race comfortably. And he will return to defend his crown in the Champion Hurdle at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, where he will once again go off as the odds-on favourite, as you’d expect.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the feature race on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival. The Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase is the minimum-distance chase on the calendar, and for the last two years, it’s been won by Willie Mullins-trained Energumene. However, Energumene won’t be running in the Champion Chase at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival due to injury, with El Fabiolo the current favourite.
