Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting
Saving your attention for Friday? The Gold Cup is the obvious race to circle. Roughly three miles and two and a half furlongs give the staying chasers plenty to do, and looking comfortable with a circuit left is very different from finding enough on the final climb.
The latest name on the trophy is Gaelic Warrior. Willie Mullins trained him and Paul Townend rode him to victory in 2026, a year after Inothewayurthinkin's success. Before those two came Galopin Des Champs, with his wins in 2023 and 2024.
A shorter-distance win leaves a question unanswered here. How did the horse finish its previous staying races? Did the jumping hold up late on? Those questions are more useful than assuming a famous name belongs at the top of your shortlist.
Champion Hurdle Betting
Tuesday's Champion Hurdle is a much shorter affair, at a shade over two miles. Watch a good hurdler closely and the efficiency is striking: hardly any time seems to be lost at an obstacle. Repeated hesitation is much harder to get away with in this company.
Lossiemouth added this prize to her collection in 2026, with Townend riding for Mullins. She had already won at the previous three Festivals: first the Triumph, then the Mares' Hurdle twice. Four visits, four wins, across three different races.
A horse may have more than one plausible Festival target during the winter. Pay attention to what connections actually confirm before treating an entry as a commitment to run in the Champion Hurdle.
Queen Mother Champion Chase Betting
Wednesday belongs to the two-mile chasers. There is not much time to recover from a mistake when the leaders keep taking lengths out of you at the fences.
The 2026 honours went to Il Etait Temps, another winner for the Mullins and Townend partnership. He joined a roll of honour that includes Energumene, successful in 2022 and again in 2023.
Watch how a contender jumps when asked to race quickly. A tidy round in a small, steadily run contest may not tell you everything about how it will cope when the pressure arrives much earlier.
Stayers' Hurdle Betting
Thursday brings a different problem for the hurdlers. In the Stayers' Hurdle they have around three miles to cover, so a horse racing too freely early on may have spent what it needs for the finish.
Home By The Lee won in 2026 for Joseph O'Brien. His success is a reminder to consider the whole field, including experienced horses whose best form may be better than their most recent finishing position suggests.
Handicaps, Novices and Other Festival Markets
Not every race works like a championship Grade 1. Handicaps use weights linked to ratings, while novice contests can bring together horses with relatively little experience over hurdles or fences. The Champion Bumper has no obstacles at all.
You cannot read all those races in quite the same way. Look at the weight and rating when opening a handicap card. With a novice, a more useful question might be whether it has ever had to jump with so many horses around it.
Festival specials may also appear, such as leading trainer or jockey markets. Only the selections displayed are available, and their settlement terms need reading separately from those for an individual race.
Cheltenham Ante-Post Betting and Non-Runner Terms
Backing a horse ante-post means making the call while some of the questions are still unanswered. Will it get to Cheltenham? Will its trainer choose this race? A winter setback or a change of plan can matter just as much as a defeat on the track.
Ordinary ante-post rules usually leave you with a losing selection if the horse does not run. Look for an explicit non-runner no bet offer if you want that condition to be different. The calendar getting closer to March does not, by itself, change the terms of your wager.
Nor does placing a bet earlier guarantee a better price. Results, injuries, ground expectations and target changes can all move a market in either direction. You can wait until more of the picture is known, but a better-informed selection can still lose.
Read the year and the race name as carefully as the horse's name. Finding the runner you wanted is not much use if you have backed it for a different target. The non-runner conditions belong in that final check too.
