When betting on the Championship winner and automatic promotion markets, you’re essentially betting on the team or teams you believe will secure a top-two finish in the 2025/26 campaign.
Usually, the favourites are the three teams that have been relegated from the Premier League and teams that have performed well in the Championship the season before. Ipswich Town and Southampton, relegated from the top-flight last season, and Sheffield United, beaten 2024/25 playoff finalists, lead the betting.
The playoffs are arguably what makes the Championship such a great league to watch, and they also add to the competitive nature of the division. Most teams out of the 24 in the second-tier aim to finish in the top six to secure a playoff birth, which is why Top Six betting is so popular, as there’s always one team that surprises the pack.
Alongside the teams in the running for automatic promotion according to the betting, the likes of newly promoted Birmingham City, Coventry City, Middlesbrough, and Leicester City, relegated from the Premier League last season, are considered to be in with a chance of securing playoff places.
For an unfortunate select few teams, they’re unlikely to be in the running to finish in the top half or the top six. Instead, they will be battling it out at the wrong end of the division in the hope of retaining their Championship status. With three teams relegated from the second tier each season, a good campaign for some teams will be finishing 21st.
It’s likely that teams such as Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday will be seen as relegation candidates. Alongside them will be newly promoted Charlton, and teams that finished in the bottom half last term, such as Oxford United, Portsmouth, QPR, and Swansea City.
In times gone by, it’s the newly promoted teams in the Championship that are expected to struggle. But this doesn’t appear to be the case this season, with Birmingham City and Wrexham expected to do well and to have successful campaigns in the second tier.
There are plenty of different Championship betting markets, all of which can be found at BetVictor:
Betting on the Championship top half finish market is slightly different when compared to the Premier League odds. Instead of the team finishing in the top 10, like in the Premier League, they can finish in the top 12 for the bet to be marked as a winning one.
Naturally, the Championship has a variety of different winners, as it's not possible to lift the trophy in two consecutive seasons due to promotion. Here's a look at the teams that have won the Championship for the past 10 seasons, alongside the runners-up, who were also granted instant promotion to the Premier League!

| 2024/25 | Leeds | Burnley |

Six new teams are added to the second tier each season, with three coming down from the Premier League and three arriving from League One. They are as follows:
These clubs typically bring with them high-quality squads and large amounts of money to spend, which is why they’re usually favourites to be promoted.
Survival is usually the goal for the three newly promoted teams, but that’s not expected to be the case this season.
