Wondering how sports betting odds work? Well, it’s actually quite simple. Odds will be presented to you based on the probability of an event happening, e.g. a team to win a hurling match. With BetVictor, your odds will be shown in one of five different formats. These are American odds, Chinese odds, Indonesian odds, decimal odds and fractional odds.

Odds are initially set by the bookmaker, but they can change due to different reasons. These can include:

• Where money is going – if lots of bets are placed on a certain selection, then its odds can shorten. On the other hand, if a selection isn’t being backed then its odds will drift.
• New knowledge – if it becomes apparent that a team will be missing several star players, their odds to win may lengthen while their opponents’ odds could be cut.

We get it, sometimes it can be difficult to understand how to read sports betting odds. As mentioned, there are a variety of different formats that odds can be displayed in, but in Ireland you are likely to either use decimal odds or fractional odds. Both are quite simple when you know how to read them.

The first type of odds you will come across are decimal odds. When betting on a team to win a Gaelic football match, decimal odds would look as follows:

Dublin – 1.25
Draw – 11.00
Mayo – 5.00
 

This indicates that Dublin are the favourites to win the match. A Mayo victory is the second most likely outcome and a draw is considered the least likely. Basically, the bigger the decimal number, the longer the odds are.

To calculate your potential winnings when using decimal odds, multiply your stake by the decimal number shown. For example, a €1 bet on Mayo to win would return €5, which includes your initial stake.

Fractional odds are slightly different, in that you will see two numbers separated by a slash, i.e. 9/1. With these, you can calculate how much you could win on your bet in comparison to how much money you stake. Using the 9/1 example, if you bet €1 then your potential winnings would be €9, plus your €1 stake back.

When betting on a team to win a League of Ireland Premier Division match using fractional odds, it would appear as follows: 
Shamrock Rovers – 1/3
Draw – 4/1
Derry City – 6/1
 

In this example, a Shamrock Rovers win is considered the most likely outcome. Their 1/3 odds can be calculated as 3 / (3+1) = 0.75, which means there is a 75% chance of that outcome. By contrast, Derry City would be the underdogs in this event. Their 6/1 odds would be calculated as 1 / (6+1) = 0.14, meaning they have a 14% chance of winning.
