What round of the FA Cup do Premier League teams enter?

The FA Cup is played over 14 rounds, and Premier League teams enter in the third round proper.

Qualifying takes place over the first six rounds, with clubs playing below the English Football League taking part. That includes those in the National League, National League North and National League South. The first round proper follows, with the 48 clubs from League One and League Two joining, before Championship and Premier League sides enter in the third round. At BetVictor, we offer FA Cup odds on every single match.

Just because the Premier League clubs join in the third round proper does not mean that the smaller clubs immediately leave the competition. Who could forget eighth-tier Marine taking on Tottenham Hotspur in 2020/21? Or Wrexham’s run to the fifth round in 2022/23.

The third round can be interesting for FA Cup betting. Keep an eye on the form of teams in rounds one and two and monitor our FA Cup odds to see if you can spot a potential upset.

What are the most famous FA Cup giant-killings?

Making FA Cup history, one of the greatest FA Cup giant-killings in recent years is Lincoln City’s win over Burnley in 2017. The Imps were playing in the National League at the time – England’s fifth tier – while Burnley were in the top half of the Premier League. Lincoln’s FA Cup odds to win the game were 10/1 pre-match, but Sean Raggett’s 89th-minute goal saw them beat the Clarets 1-0 at Turf Moor. The win saw them become the first non-league side to reach the quarter-final in over 100 years.

Another famous FA Cup giant-killing was League Two Oldham Athletic’s 3-2 win over a Liverpool side featuring Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling in 2013. There was also Wimbledon’s unbelievable 4-2 victory against West Ham in 2019 and Cambridge United’s 1-0 win at Newcastle in 2022.

The unpredictable nature of the FA Cup means that upsets can happen in every round. That means you can often find value in our FA Cup odds if you can correctly predict a giant-killing.
