Glorious Goodwood Horse Racing Betting

Late July at Goodwood has a character of its own. From Tuesday 28 July to Saturday 1 August, the 2026 Qatar Goodwood Festival takes over the hillside course for five afternoons of racing.

“Glorious Goodwood” remains the name most racing fans use. That sense of occasion is backed by a serious programme: 13 Group races, some notoriously difficult handicaps and three Group 1 highlights in the Goodwood Cup, Sussex Stakes and Nassau Stakes.

Glorious Goodwood odds are available with BetVictor throughout the week, although the board will not stand still. Declarations, withdrawals and the weight of support for a runner can all move a price or alter the markets on offer.

The latest Goodwood betting odds appear above. Today's cards and the meetings still to come can be found on our main horse racing betting page.

When Is Glorious Goodwood 2026?

The week opens on Tuesday 28 July and finishes on Saturday 1 August, with no rest day in between.

The front end of Goodwood's timetable is simple: gates at 11:00, first race at 13:50. The finish changes from day to day, however, ranging from 17:20 to 17:55, so anyone travelling should work from that afternoon's card.

High on the South Downs near Chichester, West Sussex, the course provides a test and backdrop quite unlike most British tracks. By this stage of the summer, the leading form lines from meetings such as Royal Ascot are also ready to cross.

Glorious Goodwood 2026 Schedule

Day Date Festival Day Main Race
Tuesday 28 July Goodwood Cup Day Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup
Wednesday 29 July Sussex Stakes Day Group 1 Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes
Thursday 30 July Ladies' Day Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes
Friday 31 July King George Day Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes
Saturday 1 August Stewards' Cup Day Coral Stewards' Cup

Tuesday: Goodwood Cup Day

Tuesday wastes no time, sending the leading stayers into a two-mile Goodwood Cup for the week's first Group 1. Staying is the obvious demand, yet runners still need enough pace to hold a useful position and answer when the tempo rises late on. The field often brings proven Cup horses together with younger stayers taking their first step into top-level company.

Goodwood Cup betting usually opens with win and each-way prices. Other options may be added once the final declarations are known.

Wednesday: Sussex Stakes Day

If one race defines the meeting, it is probably Wednesday's Sussex Stakes. The Group 1 mile has become Goodwood's flagship contest.

It takes place over one mile and can put the leading three-year-old milers against older, more established horses. Those clashes gave the race its familiar “Duel on the Downs” nickname.

Form from the 2,000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes can provide useful background when the market takes shape. Age allowances, the likely pace and a horse's previous record at a mile can also affect the Sussex Stakes odds.

Thursday: Nassau Stakes and Ladies' Day

Thursday belongs to the fillies and mares, who meet in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes. Over a little more than a mile and two furlongs, the best three-year-olds take on older rivals and bring very different strands of form into one field.

The Magnolia Cup also takes place on Ladies' Day. This charity race features amateur female riders from the worlds of business, sport, fashion and media. It is a well-known part of the occasion, although the Nassau Stakes remains the day's principal professional race.

Friday: King George Stakes Day

Friday is built around raw speed, courtesy of the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes.

Five furlongs leaves no time to waste. A slow start or a blocked passage can be costly, which brings early pace, track position and the prospect of a clear run into the discussion.

There is depth elsewhere on the card, notably the competitive Coral Golden Mile handicap and the Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes.

Saturday: Stewards' Cup Day

Goodwood saves one of the week's toughest puzzles for Saturday. Usually packed with runners, the six-furlong Stewards' Cup makes both pace and position difficult to untangle.

Its profile sometimes causes confusion, but the Stewards' Cup is a heritage handicap rather than a Group 1. Official ratings dictate the different weights, and recent sprint form is only one strand to follow; the draw, pace and a horse's previous visits to Goodwood can reshape the race. They will not make a notoriously open handicap predictable, but they do give the market some context.

Glorious Goodwood Betting Markets

Not every market appears on every race. These are some of the options you are most likely to see during the week.

Win Betting

A win bet is a selection on one horse to finish first. If another runner wins, the bet loses.

The price displayed when the bet is accepted is used to calculate any return. Goodwood odds can shorten or drift before the race starts.

Each-Way Betting

Each-way simply divides the wager into two equal parts: one for the win, one for the place.

Put £5 on each part and the total cost is £10. The first half needs the horse to win; the second can return if it finishes within the advertised places.

Place terms vary. Always check the number of places and the fraction shown beside the race before adding an each-way bet.

Place-Only Betting

With a place-only bet, there is no win portion. The horse simply needs to finish inside the positions stated in that market.

Those terms may change from one race to another. Non-runners can also affect the number of places available.

Forecast and Reverse Forecast Betting

For a straight forecast, both horses and their finishing order must be correct.

A reverse forecast covers the same two horses in either order. It consists of two bets, as both possible finishing sequences are included.

Forecast betting is subject to availability and may not be offered on every Goodwood race.

Multiples

Selections from different races can be joined in doubles, trebles and accumulators. One loser is enough to end a standard accumulator, regardless of how the other legs perform.

A Lucky 15 turns four selections into four singles, six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold. That makes 15 bets in all, so check the full outlay and possible returns with our Lucky 15 calculator before confirming.

Additional Race Markets

Some races may also have markets such as betting without the favourite, head-to-head match bets, winning distance or enhanced places.

What is available can differ between ante-post betting and the final racecard.

Ante-Post Goodwood Odds

Backing a horse ante-post means taking a price while the final field is still undecided.

An early price is tempting when you expect support to arrive later. Here is the risk: unless Non-Runner No Bet appears clearly on the market, a horse which misses the race will normally leave behind a losing selection.

Waiting until race day removes some of that guesswork. By then, the declarations, jockey bookings, draw and going should all be clearer, although the price may no longer be as appealing.

There is no rule saying that early or late prices must offer better value. Read the market terms first, then decide whether the odds are worth taking before declarations.

What to Consider Before Betting on Goodwood

Form study will never turn a horse into a guaranteed winner. What it can do is explain why a runner is priced as it is and help you decide whether that price holds any interest.

Recent Form and Race Class

A finishing position does not tell the whole story. Consider the strength of the race, how it unfolded and the level at which the horse usually competes.

A runner moving out of handicaps and into a Group race faces a new kind of test. The BetVictor BetFinder can help narrow the racecard using different form filters.

Distance

A recent win only tells you so much if it came over a very different distance.

The same meeting contains a five-furlong King George Stakes and a two-mile Goodwood Cup, which shows how different the demands can be. A previous run over the right sort of trip may tell you more than the bare finishing position last time.

Going

“Going” is the term used for the state of the turf. A quick surface can suit one horse perfectly and blunt another, while some runners come into their own when rain puts more give in the ground.

Conditions can alter as the week unfolds through rain, sun or watering. The most recent going report is more useful than a forecast read several days earlier.

Draw and Expected Pace

Stall position is worth considering in a crowded race, although it should never be reduced to “high is good” or “low is bad”.

Distance and ground both matter, as do rail movements and the location of the likely front-runners. In other words, the draw makes more sense when it is read beside the expected pace.

Handicap Weight

Because official ratings shape the Stewards' Cup weights, the runners meet on deliberately different terms. Carrying less can help, of course, but it does not erase questions about recent form, the quality of previous opposition or whether this particular race will suit.

In-Play Goodwood Betting

In-play markets may be offered on selected Goodwood races once the stalls open.

Prices move quickly once the horses are running, nowhere more so than in a five- or six-furlong sprint. Any live options and the applicable delay will be shown on the event page.

Where streaming is available, a viewing option will appear on the same page. Check the eligibility requirements and streaming terms before relying on it.

Betting on Goodwood on Mobile

Away from a desktop, the Goodwood racecards can be opened in a compatible mobile browser or through the BetVictor app.

Mobile users still see the same core markets and bet-slip choices. A mobile bet slip takes only seconds to complete, but pause over the runner, price and stake before confirming, especially after changing from win to each-way.
