2025 Belgian Grand Prix Preview

As Formula 1 reaches Spa-Francorchamps for the iconic Belgian Grand Prix, the 2025 title fight remains firmly between McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. At present, it's the former that leads the way on 234 points, with Norris slightly behind on 226. With nine wins between them and twenty podiums, McLaren's dominance is there for all to see. Piastri was the consistent early-season winner, but it's Norris who has come to the fore of late, winning the last two grand prix.

Defending champion Max Verstappen, meanwhile, is sitting on 165 points, 69 points shy of Piastri. There have been performance and reliability issues, and now with Christian Horner having been fired, there's uncertainty as to whether the Dutchman's future is at Red Bull. He claimed pole at Silverstone, so he remains a threat, but for how long is unclear.

Spa's legendary 7 km circuit, with its undulating Ardennes terrain, Eau Rouge-Raidillon complex, and notoriously unpredictable weather, remains an acid test for car setup, tyre strategy, and driver skill. Recent resurfacing has altered grip levels, making tyre management even more critical.

The Belgian Grand Prix will put more than pace in the spotlight: it's a pivotal battleground where McLaren's intra-team dynamics, Red Bull's stability, and Spa's trademark volatility converge. Expect strategy gambits, changing conditions, and perhaps a twist that reshapes the title race's momentum.

It's McLaren's Championship to Lose

As things stand, the 2024 Formula 1 championship is McLaren's to lose, which is supported by Drivers' Championship betting as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are the only available at a short price. Piastri tops the standings on 234 points, Norris is behind him on 226 points, and Max Verstappen is somewhere in the distance on 165 points.

The introduction of the upgraded MCL39 early in the year solidified McLaren's advantage. Built on the championship-winning MCL38, the car has been praised by Norris as "in the same ballpark as last year's." Extensive mid-season upgrades, particularly around Austria and Silverstone, improved aerodynamic efficiency and tyre performance.

Recent races have only served to reinforce the McLaren duo's authority. Piastri, who was winning races consistently earlier in the season, is now seeing teammate Norris collect the victories. Crucially, however, Piastri is finishing second to him, taking significant points each time.

By contrast, Red Bull and Verstappen continue to falter. There have been DNFs, poor performances, reliability issues, and internal turmoil, resulting in Christian Horner being fired. Other teams have shown flashes, such as Mercedes and Ferrari, but the lack of consistency isn't there to threaten McLaren.

As a result, the championship is McLaren's to lose. The only question left to answer is which driver will win it? Piastri or Norris?

The Contenders at Spa

Spa stands as a defining test of pace, precision, and adaptability, with four names the favourites to succeed in Belgium.

Oscar Piastri (McLaren)

The championship leader with 234 points heads to Belgium as joint favourite to win alongside teammate Lando Norris, according to Belgian Grand Prix winner odds, and it's easy to see why. He's won the most races, he's got the joint most podiums, he's due a win, and Spa's long straights and technical corners suit his driver style.

Lando Norris (McLaren)

Lando Norris is eight points behind teammate Piastri in the title race, and he's the most in-form driver of late. He's won the last two grand prix, including a huge home victory at Silverstone, and he knows a third in a row could see him overtake Piastri in first. If Norris does well in qualifying and deploys his usual aggressive and fast-paced style, he will be a contender to win.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull)

Max Verstappen is currently off the pace in the race to defend his crown, but he had the pace to secure pole at Silverstone. The reality is, the Dutchman needs to start winning consistently, even with everything going on behind the scenes. Spa is his home away from home, so expect a performance. Whether it will be enough to win is another question.

George Russell (Mercedes)

George Russell, who won in Canada and has also claimed five podiums, has shown a fair level of consistency so far this season. Sitting on 147 points, he will know that another victory can really change the outlook. And, as he owns outstanding qualifying pace, he can put himself in contention to get off to a good start at Spa.

Key Storylines

Here are several storylines that could play out at Spa:

The Horner Shockwave

Christian Horner's abrupt dismissal after a 20-year reign at Red Bull and immediate replacement by Laurent Mekies marks a seismic shift, especially coming just before Spa. With team morale shaken, Red Bull enters the Ardennes grappling with the chaos.

McLaren's Intra-Team Tug-of-War

McLaren continue their stellar season, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris locked into a neck-and-neck duel. Piastri leads the standings with Norris not far behind. But everyone is waiting to see if the rivalry will eventually become a problem.

Spa's Strategic Wildcards

Belgium's Ardennes circuit is notorious for its fickle weather, one corner pouring in rain, the next dry. Couple that with its resurfacing, and it puts an onus on teams being able to adapt on the fly in order to compete.

Final Thoughts

The race for the championship is on, but as many expected, it remains a two-horse race between McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, and that will still be the case if neither wins in Belgium, which also feels highly unlikely based on how things have transpired in the last two races, especially.

The only real difference is that while Piastri looked to be edging away from Norris, the latter has now reeled in his teammate by winning the last two races, and this has been reflected by sports betting sites having them closely matched where the odds to be crowned champion are concerned.

The reality is, what could change after the race at Spa is the order, with Norris potentially moving into top spot. This could influence the dynamic between the pair, and it could also be bad news for the likes of Max Verstappen and George Russell, as the McLaren duo appear to be pushing each other all the way.
