Types of NBA Odds

With NBA betting odds, certain events attract more attention than others. Find a breakdown of NBA draft lottery, playoff, finals and championship odds below.

NBA Draft Lottery Odds

Every summer, new talent is sourced from the best collegiate basketball players. This is the draft. NBA draft odds let fans wager on which college hopeful will be picked first, second, third or fourth.

NBA Playoff Odds

After playing the regular season, the teams have been filtered into 16 teams – 8 from the west and east conferences. NBA playoffs odds concern these semifinal games where the games get more intense.

NBA Finals Betting Odds

At the end of the playoffs, the final game is played between the two conference champions. NBA finals betting is a wager on the outcome or specific events that happen during this crucial game.

NBA Championship Odds

These odds concern the whole competition. Fans bet on which basketball team can go all the way, surviving the regular season, winning playoffs, then finals.

The odds adapt as the competition comes to a head, but you can keep up to date as the tournament progresses.

NBA Rookie of the Year Odds

The Rookie of the Year award goes to recently drafted basketball players. Fans bet on which new athletes will take this early career accolade. Find our NBA ROTY odds on Betvictor sport page.

NBA MVP Odds

Many MVP awards are handed out, though most fans bet on the all-NBA Michael Jordan Trophy (Prior to 2021 also known as the Maurice Podoloff Trophy). This is given annually to the best player of the whole sport, and fans bet on who is worthy of receiving it.

There is no bigger individual accolade in the NBA than being awarded the title of MVP. And with BetVictor, you can bet on any player in contention to be named MVP and win the Michael Jordan Trophy.

Legends like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal are former MVP winners. In 2024/25, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the man who has clinched the award – he also led the league in scoring and guided OKC to a league-best record. Nikola Jokić previously won back-to-back titles in 2020/21 and 2021/22. Joel Embiid won the NBA MVP award in 2022/23. He is among the betting favourites, alongside Luka Doncic, SGA, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Edwards and Jayson Tatum.

You can also get a range of NBA Odds for other individual awards.

Tips to Bet on the NBA

There are many tips and strategies that help fans make better NBA betting picks. Here are some basics to get you started:

  • The momentum of a game rises and falls over time. This means that fewer points are scored toward the end of a game when basketballers get fatigued. Keep this in mind for points-based betting lines.
  • Choose one team and learn all about them. It’s much easier to track one team’s performance, along with the players in that team. The best NBA bets and college basketball tips today are made by those who have learned everything there is to know about a squad.
  • Practise safe and responsible gambling by consulting support resources offered at BetVictor.

An Overview of the NBA

The NBA stands for the National Basketball Association, which is a professional basketball league featuring 30 teams across North America. The league began in 1946 at the Commodore Hotel in New York City, with Maurice Podoloff serving as the first president.

Nowadays, rosters include a maximum of 15 players per team, though only 12 can be active for each game. The NBA controls all rules, player trades, and creates the yearly schedule that includes the Regular Season, Playoffs, and Draft.

The Structure of the NBA

The NBA follows a structure that spans nearly nine months each year, giving players a total of 3 off-season months to recover and recoup. Regular Season action begins in October and continues through April, with all 30 teams playing exactly 82 games during this period.

Each team faces opponents from both the Eastern and Western Conferences, building their record for playoff qualification. Games consist of four 12-minute quarters, and teams must attempt a shot within 24 seconds of gaining possession.

Playoff qualification is an important part of the season that occurs when things start to wind down in April. Six teams from each conference earn automatic spots in the postseason tournament, while teams ranked 7th through 10th in both conferences compete in a special Play In Tournament for the final two playoff spots per conference.

Championship glory comes through surviving multiple playoff rounds from April to June. Eastern Conference teams battle through brackets on one side, while Western Conference squads fight on the other. Winners from each conference meet in the Finals, where one team claims the ultimate prize, which is, of course, the infamous Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.

The Most Popular NBA Betting Markets

If you're not sure which NBA betting markets to wager on, here are some of the most popular options that are available right here at BetVictor:

NBA Championship Outright: Should you want to place a bet on which team will win the 25/26 NBA Championship, this is the market for doing so. If your chosen team hoists the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy at the end of the season after winning the Championship series, this bet will be marked as a successful one.

Match Winner: You can bet on every NBA match that is played throughout the season right here at BetVictor. This market allows you to pick which team you think will win a certain match, with the option for a tie also being included.

Spread: Also known as handicap betting in other sports, this market involves a virtual handicap being added to the favoured side, or a virtual advantage being given to the underdog, in an attempt to make the game as even as possible. For example, if you bet on the Detroit Pistons to beat the Los Angeles Lakers -8.5, it means that the Pistons must win by at least 9 points for the bet to be marked as a successful wager.

Over or Under: The over or under market focuses on how many points are scored in the match for both teams combined. A number is shown for this bet, and players must decide whether more or fewer points will be scored. For example, if a player bets on over 234.5 points, it means that at least 235 must be scored in the match in order for the associated potential winnings to be awarded.

There are plenty of other basketball betting options available at BetVictor, too, including winning margins, quarter betting, and player props, to name just a few.

Frequently Asked Questions

With money line bets, fans pick a team and back them to win for a basketball event, winning money if they win. The favourites to win will yield lower returns, so there are always fans who back the underdog instead.

NBA handicap betting is the most common type of bet. Here, final scores are predicted for each team based on their relative strength. You are giving an advantage or disadvantage to one of the two teams. For example, in a game between the Boston Celtics vs LA Lakers, if we bet LA Lakers +3.5, we will win our bet if the Lakers win or even lose the match with up to 3 points. In case they lose the game by 4 or more points, this bet would be settled as a losing bet.

Totals bets in the NBA are simple. Also known as Over/Unders, here the sportsbook predicts the total score for the half and full game. Then fans can bet whether the real score will be higher or lower than the predicted one. The unique scoring system for basketball means that just one point can make the difference between a successful or unsuccessful wager.

NBA prop bets are more specific, ignoring the overall outcome of a basketball game. Instead, fans can bet on how many points, rebounds, or assists a player gets. This kind of bet is a favourite with fans of star players.

Some of the most popular NBA betting markets include outright winner of the Championship, match winner, over or under on the total number of points, and spread betting options, all of which can be found in our sportsbook.

Yes, with our in-play betting you can find games and bet on them live. You can bet on every match available and get comprehensive odds depending on who you support.

Fans can find updates from outlets like ESPN, the NBA and team social media accounts. We also have the BetVictor blog which reports current events.

An NBA game consists of four 12-minute quarters, in total 48 minutes of regulation play.

A standard NBA basketball court measures 28.7 meters in length by 15.2 meters in width.

A double-double in basketball happens when a player achieves double-digit figures (10 or more) in two of the following five statistical categories during a single game: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots. For example, a player scores 14 points and grabs 11 rebounds in one game.

A triple-double in basketball means a player records double-digit figures (10 or more) in three of the five major statistical categories during a single game. These categories include points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots.

In the NBA, the term 'bonus' occurs when a team commits five fouls in a quarter. After reaching this limit, the opposing team is awarded free throws for every additional foul, regardless of whether it was a shooting foul.
