Scheduled to start on June 11th 2026, the World Cup is the next major international football competition for fans to look forward to. It will be the 23rd iteration of the tournament, featuring a total of 48 teams, which will be split into 12 groups of 4 in the beginning stages. Each team will play each other once and the top two from each group will automatically progress, as will eight of the best third-placed nations.

There are five frontrunners when looking at the 2026 World Cup odds, with Spain being the favourites so far. Here's an overview of the teams that are being heavily backed by punters and sports betting experts around the world:
Many fans will be hoping that Spain can ride the momentum of their Euro 2024 victory to lift the World Cup in 2026. They have a well-rounded squad with chemistry all over the pitch, with Luis de la Fuente seemingly getting the most out of his players whenever they step foot on a pitch.
Some of the star players to look out for in the Spanish squad include the Ballon D'or winner Rodri, alongside Dani Carvajal, Lamine Yamal, Gavi, and captain Alvaro Morata, to name just a few.
When it comes to the World Cup, it seems as if the Brazilian team always poses a threat by fielding a strong team. They haven't lifted the trophy since 2002 and in their last campaign, which occurred in 2022, they were eliminated in the Quarter-Finals on penalties by third-place finishers Croatia. With that being said, they are the most successful team in the history of the tournament, being the only country to compete in every iteration of the World Cup and winning it a total of 5 times.
They possess an incredibly strong selection of goalkeepers, including Ederson of Manchester City and Alisson of Liverpool. Brazil also has a host of superstar outfield players, including Vinicius Jr, Neymar, Gabriel, and Marquinhos.
Next up is England, a team that will be feeling motivated as Thomas Tuchel looks to end the woes of the squad. England have made their way to various finals over the past decade, including in Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. However, they simply couldn't get the job done against Italy or Spain, respectively.
On paper, England has one of the strongest teams in the world, so it's almost no surprise to spectators that they're making significant progress in tournaments. Harry Kane will likely captain the team, with other young stars such as Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, and Phil Foden also looking to make their mark.
The French team have arguably flown under the radar in recent years, performing under the standards that they set for themselves at the start of the decade. After lifting the World Cup in 2018, they narrowly lost out in 2022 in their attempt to retain, falling to Argentina in the finals. In the Euros, they finished third in 2024; however, in 2020, the team failed to make it out of the group stages.
Of course, all eyes will be on their star player Kylian Mbappe, as he looks to find the goal-scoring form he had at PSG. Other standout players who will likely feature in the France squad include Antoine Griezmann, William Saliba, Theo Hernández, and Ousmane Dembélé.
Despite holding their own against France in the World Cup 2022 finals before winning 4-2 on penalties, the champions are currently fifth favourites to defend their title in 2026. The reason for this is rather obvious, with their superstar player Lionel Messi not yet committing himself to the event.
Lionel Scaloni will remain hopeful that Messi will participate. However, the team is full of other hugely talented individuals, including Lautaro Martinez, Paulo Dybala, Emiliano Martinez, and Alexis Mac Allister.

The most recent World Cup winners are Argentina, which saw Lionel Messi add the most prestigious trophy in history to his resume. Argentina beat France after an incredibly physically demanding game, which ended 3-3 after normal time and extra time. A penalty shootout was needed to split the two, with Montiel scoring the winner for Argentina before they lifted the trophy!
