FA Trophy Odds & Betting

The FA Trophy gives non-league clubs a major chance to secure a big Wembley final each season, and possibly even silverware. Created in 1969, the competition forms a key part of the non-league soccer calendar with teams from the National League, the Southern League, Isthmian League, and Northern Premier League doing battle every year.

Free from the noise and hype of soccer League and Premier League sides, the competition is full of excitement and stories from the lower rungs of the soccer ladder. At BetVictor, we love the action from this level of the game. Because of that, we'll bring you the full range of FA Trophy betting markets and odds during a season.

Rules and Structure of the FA Trophy

The FA Trophy was initially created to run alongside the FA Amateur Cup, before essentially replacing the competition following its collapse in 1974 when the FA abolished amateur status.

Today's competition operates as a traditional knockout cup tournament with three qualifying rounds before the First Round Proper gets started. Teams from Level 8 in the soccer pyramid compete in the first two qualifying rounds with Level 7 sides joining in the final preparatory round.

From Round Two onwards, clubs from the National League North and National League South join the competition, with National League clubs finally entering in Round Three.

Every round up to the semi-final is a single leg match, with the last four given added focus with a home and away tie ahead of that big trip to Wembley.

At BetVictor, you'll find the full range of FA Trophy betting markets throughout the competition. But as you'd expect, the entrance of National League clubs in the middle of the tournament adds an extra layer of interest as teams from further down the ladder look to pit their wits against former soccer League sides. We're talking an equivalent of an FA Cup giant killing, just a little lower down the soccer pyramid.

FA Trophy Recent History

So, what can the form book tell us when looking to make a bet on FA Trophy soccer? Let's dive into the recent history to find out.

The early years of the competition were dominated by the now defunct Scarborough, who won three of the first eight FA Trophy finals. The former North Yorkshire club are the joint most successful side in the history of the competition with their three title wins matched by both Woking and Telford United. However, two of those clubs , Scarborough and Telford United, have gone out of business, and there's been no win for any of the three since 1997.

Since the competition returned to the new Wembley Stadium in 2007 there's been a mixed bag of both finalists and winners. Stevenage Borough and York City have won two titles each in recent history with Ebbsfleet United, Barrow, Darlington, Wrexham, Cambridge United, North Ferriby United, FC Halifax Town, Brackley Town and AFC Fylde all seeing success in the capital.

Alongside a wide cross section of winners, there have also been some shock final appearances in recent seasons, including big days for Kidderminster Harriers, Torquay United, Mansfield Town, Newport County, Grimsby Town, Gosport Borough, Macclesfield Town, Bromley, and Leyton Orient.

What drama will the FA Trophy bring this year? Let's find out!
