The Women’s National Basketball Association, or WNBA, is the women’s version of the NBA. It’s a professional basketball league for women in the USA and was founded in 1996, before the inaugural season began the following year in 1997. At present, the WNBA is made up of fifteen teams in total, following the addition of the Golden State Valkyries in 2025 and the expansion franchises Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire in 2026. The WNBA league is expected to continue growing, with further expansion planned to bring the league to eighteen teams by 2030.
The WNBA, similarly to the NBA, is divided into two conferences – Eastern and Western. In the Eastern Conference, teams competing are Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever, New York Liberty and Washington Mystics.
While in the Western Conference, you have Dallas Wings, Las Vegas Aces, Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm.
Each WNBA campaign runs from May through to September, and Las Vegas Aces are the reigning champions. The most successful teams are Houston Comets, Minnesota Lynx and Seattle Storm, who all have four titles apiece to their respective names. The Comets are no longer active.
Like the NBA, the WNBA is a popular basketball competition on which to place bets, with multiple markets available to explore.
The WNBA Championship betting market is arguably the most straightforward where the Women’s National Basketball Association is concerned because it’s simply a case of placing a bet or bets on the team or teams you think will be crowned WNBA champions at the end of the season.
Everyone knows just how much of a deal it is to be declared the MVP in the NBA, and the same applies to the WNBA. And it’s possible to place wagers on who will potentially achieve this iconic status.
Of course, betting on individual matches is incredibly popular in the WNBA. But the WNBA Rookie of the Year outright market is another that very much steals the show.
Again, it’s another prestigious award to win, with a whole raft of great names having picked up the accolade over the years. The top rookie is decided by a panel consisting of leading sportswriters who cover the WNBA.
