Sheffield Wednesday were the last team outside the English top-flight to win the League Cup. In 1991, John Sheridan wrote his name into League Cup and Owls’ folklore with a thunderous strike that gave them their only success to date.
The South Yorkshire side had suffered relegation to the second division the season before and were up against more illustrious opponents – Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. However, it was Wednesday, led by Ron Atkinson, who managed to lift the trophy thanks to players like Nigel Pearson, Nigel Worthington and David Hirst.
Lower league clubs have recently achieved success in the League Cup without winning the competition.
Championship outfit Cardiff City reached the final in 2012, while Bradford City, a
League Two club at the time, went all the way to the 2013 final.
