During the Regular Season, each team faces off home and away, over a total of 30 games each. After this point, the top eight enter the Championship play-off with the bottom eight playing in the Relegation Play-off.

The play-offs consist of each team playing each other once, to crown the champions, decide the European places and confirm the two teams to drop down a division. The Polish champions head into the qualifying rounds of the Champions League with the teams finishing from second to fourth making their way into the qualifying rounds of the Europa League.

The current champions are Piast Gliwice, the club claiming their first title in 2019.

Formed in 1926 as Liga Polska, the Ekstraklasa was claimed by Wisla Krakow in its first two seasons. Teams from Krakow enjoyed some early dominance which is still reflected today in Wisla being joint top in the all-time standings of Polish football with 14 wins alongside Gornik Zabrze.

The structure of the league has remained much the same since the 1920s, with the only real significant changes being the number of teams, cut to 10 in the 1930s before the onset of war disrupted everything. Following the war, the changes to the make-up of the country itself impacted the teams in the tournament, before the league settled to what we know and love today.
