The Championship is the second flight of professional football in England, with only the Premier League being above it. It features a total of 24 teams, all of whom play against one another twice per season, with one home tie and one away tie. This leads to a total of 46 matchdays or 552 games per year, all of which are covered right here at BetVictor.
At the end of each Championship season, the team finishing in first and second will be promoted to the Premier League, while teams finishing 3rd to 6th will face off in a playoff bracket. In the first round, or the semi-finals, the team that placed 3rd in the regular season will play a series of 2 games against the 6th place team, with the sides finishing 4th and 5th also facing off. The winning teams, based on the aggregate score of both games (1 home and 1 away) will progress to the final.
In the playoff final, which is hosted at Wembley Stadium, there will only be one game, with extra time and penalties being used if needed. The winning team will join the English Premier League, while the other will remain in the Championship for the next season.
At the other end of the table, the teams that finish 22nd, 23rd, and 24th will be relegated to League One. The Championship also gains 6 new teams each season, three of which are teams relegated from the Premier League, while the other three are teams newly promoted from League One.
