Wembley is a long way from the early qualifying rounds of the FA Trophy. For the clubs who get there, though, this competition offers something the league table cannot: a cup final at the national stadium. This season’s holders are Southend United, who needed penalties to get past Wealdstone in May. The 2026/27 competition is already through qualifying, and the first round proper is due on 24 October. After that, the road runs through the winter towards a final on Sunday 16 May 2027.

You will recognise plenty of National League names, but this is not just a competition for its top division. North and South clubs take part too, along with sides from the Southern, Isthmian and Northern Premier leagues. Entry is for eligible first teams at Steps 1 to 4 of the National League System, or tiers five to eight in the overall pyramid.

The higher divisions join later. North and South sides begin in the second round proper on 14 November 2026, then the National League’s top division enters in the third round on 12 December. A smaller club might have several cup wins behind it before those opponents appear in the draw.

It is worth separating the three FA competitions. In the FA Cup, a non-league team can eventually meet Premier League and EFL opposition. Those clubs do not enter the Trophy. The FA Vase is for clubs below the Trophy’s level, although the two competitions share Non-League Finals Day at Wembley.

The Trophy itself dates back to 1969. Macclesfield Town won the first final a year later, beating Telford United 2-0.

Some Saturdays call for a view on the next game, rather than who will lift a trophy months later. Open the fixture for its available markets. The selection will differ between matches, particularly in the earlier rounds.

Match Result and To Qualify

The draw still has a place in FA Trophy match betting, despite every tie needing a winner. That is because a normal match-result selection stops at 90 minutes plus stoppage time.

Imagine following your club through a 1-1 draw and a winning shootout. They are through, the supporters are celebrating, but a straight bet on them to win in normal time has lost. You would need the To Qualify market, under its displayed terms, for a selection based on progression.

Southend made that distinction rather neatly at Wembley in 2026. They left with the silverware after a 4-2 shootout win, following a 0-0 draw. Nobody had won the game inside 90 minutes.

Both Teams to Score and Over/Under Goals

Two recent finals show how far apart these questions can be. Aldershot put three past Spennymoor in 2025 without conceding. Southend and Wealdstone could not find a goal between them a year later.

Over 2.5 Goals would have won on the Aldershot scoreline, because there were three goals altogether. Both Teams to Score: Yes would have lost. It needs each side to score, which a 3-0 does not provide. Conversely, 1-1 is enough for both teams to score but leaves an Over 2.5 selection short.

Keep the period named in the market in mind, especially at Wembley. Goals scored outside that period do not count towards the bet just because they appear in the eventual match report.

Correct Score, Handicaps and Combined Bets

Backing 2-0 is a fairly precise opinion. You have picked the winner, the winning margin and a clean sheet, so a third goal changes everything for the bet even if your team scores it.

There is a little more room with Win to Nil, where offered: 1-0, 2-0 and 3-0 all fit. Concede once and it loses, however well the rest of the afternoon goes.

A handicap is another way to express an opinion about the gap between the sides. Put a favourite on -1.5 and a narrow 1-0 will not do; they need to win by two or more. Read the handicap label carefully, since Asian and three-way versions have different settlement rules.

You may also find Half Time/Full Time or result-and-goals combinations. Think about every condition on the selection. Getting the winner right does not rescue a bet that also required a different half-time result.

Hornchurch are a good answer to anyone who assumes the highest-ranked clubs have this competition to themselves. They were in the seventh tier when they beat Hereford 3-1 in the 2021 final. The size of the occasion did not stop them coming from behind to win it.

Look at the draw before settling on a club. Two strong sides drawn together early cannot both make Wembley, however well their league seasons are going. The same goes for judging a longer-priced team: who might it have to get past?

Current FA Trophy winner odds appear in the outright market when listed. The National League entrants join in December, with six ties between them and the trophy from the third round onwards. A side looking impressive in October still has to carry its cup run through the winter and into May.

A five-match form guide is a useful place to begin, but the names on the other side of those results deserve a look. Beating three struggling teams in one division is not quite the same examination as visiting promotion contenders a level higher.

Team news is often the more immediate issue. Has the regular keeper been rested? Is the leading scorer in the squad? A player prominent in the league highlights may be unavailable for the cup, and a recent arrival may not be eligible to play.

The club’s own announcements and the starting line-up help answer those questions. They also give you something firmer than an assumption that a promotion-chasing manager will rotate, or that a lower-ranked side will automatically field its strongest eleven.

A red card, a goal or a penalty decision can change both the match and the price. Betting can pause around those moments, while score updates and pictures may reach you late. There is no need to rush into another selection because the first ten minutes have been lively.
