Irish Football Betting & Odds

The League of Ireland has proven to be a fertile ground for some of the biggest names in Irish football to form the early days of their playing careers.

Iconic former Manchester United captain Roy Keane started his professional career with Cork-based side Cobh Ramblers, with a host of other Premier League household names also beginning their careers in the domestic Irish league.

Seamus Coleman, Paul McGrath, Steve Staunton, James McClean, Wes Hoolahan and Shane Long all plied their trade here before moving onto the English Premier League. Former big names from the other side of the Irish Sea have also enjoyed a swansong in Ireland, with Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Gordon Banks and Trevor Brooking all turning out there in the past.

The division has also grown in prestige in recent seasons with Dundalk flying the flag in Europe after narrowly missing out on a Champions League group spot in 2017 before clinching two Europa League group stage appearances in just four seasons.

This history of being a production line for the best Irish talents means the League of Ireland Premier Division betting is particularly exciting and one we love to get involved with at BetVictor.

League of Ireland Premier Division Structure and Schedule

The League of Ireland normally operates as a summer league, running from February to October with certain exceptions made for domestic cup competitions and European participation.

Both the Premier Division and the First Division in the League of Ireland consist of 10 teams each, with each club playing every team in their division four times a season, twice at home and twice away.

The bottom side in the Premier Division is relegated to the First Division with the second bottom (9th place) side entering a relegation play-off with a team from the tier below.

The Premier Division champion goes into the qualifying rounds of the Champions League with second to fourth reaching the qualifying stages of the Europa League. The sheer amount of football played within the division means that League of Ireland Premier Division betting markets are wide ranging and here at Bet Victor we have a broad selection of markets available.

League of Ireland Past Winners

Following its inception in 1921, the League of Ireland has been traditionally dominated by teams from the Dublin City area.

In the first 100 years of Irish football, the title was won by a team from the Dublin region on 61 occasions, compared to 39 for the rest of the country. Capital clubs also won over half of the titles following the creation of the newly formatted Premier Division at the start of the 1985/86 domestic season.

Shamrock Rovers are the most successful side in the history of Irish football followed by Dundalk, Shelbourne, and Bohemians. Dundalk are the only non-Dublin based club.

That level of consistency in title winners is essential when looking to bet on League of Ireland Premier Division champions. So, who’s your money on this time round?
