Keir Starmer became the new leader of the Labour Party in 2020, but the political landscape has been anything but settled in recent years. Labour is a party infamous for factions and infighting, and another Labour leadership contest is never truly off the cards.
If you’re looking to get into political betting, or are a seasoned veteran of the political scene, you’re in the right place. With BetVictor you’ll have access to a huge array of politics betting markets with the latest competitive odds, including next Labour leader betting odds and markets covering who will be the next leader and when the next leadership race will begin.
The current leader of the Labour Party is Keir Starmer, the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras.
Keir Starmer was a human rights lawyer before he became an MP. He was appointed to the Queen’s Council and served as both the Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service. He became an MP in 2015 and the latest leader of the Labour Party in April 2020.
Although Starmer won the 2020 Labour leadership election with over half the vote, he doesn’t enjoy unanimous support, with some influential trade unions and grassroots factions within the party membership actively trying to remove him. Whatever your position on Kier Starmer, whether you think he’ll lead the party successfully or he’ll be culled in a Labour civil war, you’ll find the latest next Labour leader odds with BetVictor.
The last Labour Party leadership election was held in February and April of 2020. It was triggered when former leader Jeremy Corbyn announced his resignation as party leader after Labour’s defeat in the December 2019 general election.
Five Labour MPs received enough support from the party to stand for the leadership - Keir Starmer, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy, Jess Phillips, and Emily Thornberry. Three of these candidates then received enough votes to proceed to the final ballot - Keir Starmer, Rebecca Long-Bailey, and Lisa Nandy. Keir Starmer emerged as the winner with 56.2% of the votes.
In the 2020 leadership election, it was a case of the favourite winning the race. Keir Starmer received the most support from his party in the initial ballots and was the favourite with most bookmakers. Political contests are rarely so clear cut however, and there’s no outright favourite to replace Starmer. Take a look at our next labour leader betting markets and odds and see who gets your vote.
Despite regarding itself as the party of equality, and despite the fact that Labour has had more women MPs than all other parties combined, Labour has never been led by a woman.
During the 2020 Labour leadership election, four of the five competing candidates were women, and the deputy leader of the Labour party, Angela Rayner, is a woman. It feels like a female leader of the Labour Party is coming. With Lisa Nandy, Rosena Allin-Khan, Anneliese Dodds, and Angela Rayner herself amongst the favourites to become the next Labour leader, it could happen sooner than expected.
Have your say on who you think will take charge of the party next with BetVictor and bet on next Labour leader.
