Welsh Open History

The Welsh Open was founded in 1992 as a ranking tournament, a year after the Welsh Professional Championship came to a close in 1991, where only Welsh players could compete. Since 1999, Mark Williams is the only Welshman to have ever won the Welsh Open.

Originally held in the Newport centre, the venue for the Welsh Open moved to Motorpoint arena in Cardiff as it grew in popularity. In 2022, it moved back to the city of Newport and now for 2023, the Welsh Open will be held for the first time in Llandudno.

Out of all the Home Nation snooker tournaments, the Welsh Open is the sport’s longest running ranking event other than the World Snooker Championship and UK Snooker Championship.

Welsh Open Records

The Welsh Open has a rich history with many memorable moments. Here's a list of Welsh Open records held by winners and players.
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan made his first maximum break at the Welsh Open in 1999.
  • The legendary Stephen Hendry scored his 10th 147 break in 2011.
  • Ronnie O'Sullivan set the record for most maximum breaks as he scored his 12th in 2014.
  • John Higgins has set the record with most win, with five Welsh Open titles under his belt.
  • Kyren Wilson landed the most recent maximum break in the 2020 tournament.

The Top Welsh Open Players - Who to Bet on?

This year, over 70 players will meet in Llandudno to battle it out on the table. Players will compete in this tournament with a total prize fund of £405,000, but only the winner will take the top prize of £70,000.

With such a prize up for grabs and a prestigious title along with it, the cream of the snooker crop will be participating; Joe Perry (the 2022 champion), Judd Trump (the 2022 runner-up), Jordan Brown, Ronnie O'Sullivan and John Higgins. It's difficult to know who will come out on top with so many star players. In the Welsh Open betting, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump and Neil Robertson are favourites to win. Ronnie O'Sullivan has four titles under his belt already and Neil Robertson has two. However, Judd Trump has twice been the runner-up, and never the winner, will 2023 be his year to clinch the Welsh Open trophy? Who will triumph?

So far in the Home Nations Series, Mark Allen lifted the 2022 Northern Irish Snooker Open prize, Gary Wilson won the 2022 Scottish Snooker Open, and Mark Williams clinched the 2022 English Snooker Open title. Will Mark Williams be able to keep that momentum and win on home turf for the 2023 Welsh Open? Make your choice in our betting odds.
