Unlike other events in the Home Nations Series, the Scottish Open has been around longer than 2016. In the past, it has been known as the International Open and Players Championship before once again becoming the Scottish Open as part of the Home Nations Series from 2016 onwards. Because of the history of the tournament and the players involved, Scottish Open snooker odds are regularly searched in the run-up to the event. Gary Wilson comes into the 2023 Scottish Open as the defending champion and will be looking to make it two from two.
As the Scottish Open approaches, betting markets covering the tournament will begin to open at BetVictor, who sponsor the Home Nations Series, which also covers events in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Snooker betting at this time is hugely popular, with the Scottish Open action watched all around the globe.
The outright betting market is one of the most popular markets concerning the snooker Scottish Open odds. The reason is that people can wager on outright bets on the player they think will win the tournament before the action gets underway in December or during the event when they’ve seen how players are performing. It’s a market that will change along the way but will always reflect the goings on in Edinburgh during the competition.
Like the outright betting market, match betting is accessed before the Scottish Open begins, day to day and stage to stage. Match betting odds will vary from tie to tie based on the players involved. For example, defending Scottish Open champion Gary Wilson or defending world champion Luca Brecel pitted against anyone will see them heavy favourites. But if they were matched against each other, the odds would be shorter. How players have been performing, and the stage of the competition will also influence the market.
There’s a £5,000 prize up for grabs for the highest break, so not only will players be out to win some extra cash as they play, but they’re also keen on hitting high breaks to help secure victory in their matches. It’s why the highest break market is becoming more popular in snooker, especially in ranking events that are televised or streamed live. Judd Trump hit the highest break of the 2022 Scottish Open (147) and will be out to do the same again.
Since the Scottish Open became part of the Home Nations Series in 2016, there have been seven winners across eight tournaments. At present, Mark Selby is the only player to have not only won the competition twice but to have successfully defended his crown, with the 2019 and 2020 titles belonging to him. Other winners include Marco Fu, Neil Robertson, Mark Allen, world champion Luca Brecel and the current defending Scottish Open champion Gary Wilson. The aim for Wilson will be to come into the 2023 Scottish Open and make a successful defence of his title, which would bring him level in terms of achievements in the tournament with Selby. But it will be far from straightforward.
The first player people will look to as one of the favourites to win the Scottish Open will naturally be Gary Wilson because he’s the defending champion. However, with only Mark Selby being able to mount a successful defence, it’s likely that Selby, Ronnie O’Sullivan, 2021 champion Luca Brecel and others will be installed as favourites, perhaps ahead of Wilson. Wilson is currently ranked number eighteen in the world, and any player in the top ten or top fifteen will likely fancy their chances of being crowned the winner in December. Former Scottish Open champions such as Neil Robertson and Mark Allen could also come to the fore to become two-time winners.
The Scottish Open will run from 11 December 2023 – 17 December 2023.
The tournament will take place at Meadowbank Sports Centre, Edinburgh.
The total prize fund is £427,000, and the winner’s share is £80,000.
The defending champion is Gary Wilson.
