As Formula 1 arrives at Silverstone for the 2025 British Grand Prix on July 6, the season has already served up a thrilling story of intra-team rivalry, technical challenges, and a real shake-up at the front, making Britain the perfect backdrop for a pivotal weekend.

McLaren have stamped their authority on the championship so far, with Oscar Piastri leading the standings on 216 points, closely followed by teammate Lando Norris on 201 points. Piastri has been the standout force, winning five races and securing eight consecutive podiums. However, Norris isn’t there to make up the numbers; fresh off his third win in Austria, he’s closed the gap to 15 points and is ready to strike.

Beyond the McLaren story is a landscape of unpredictability. Max Verstappen, the four-time reigning champion and one of the favourites in pre-season, suffered a disastrous DNF in Austria that left him 61 points adrift in third. Red Bull’s struggles have seen Christian Horner suggest it looks like a “two-horse race.” There was a flash of redemption for Mercedes following George Russell’s Canadian Grand Prix victory, but they remain well behind McLaren.

With the championship up for grabs and national heroes at home, Silverstone looms as a showdown in every sense. Expect roaring crowds, strategic gambles, and plenty of tension, setting the stage for what could be a season-defining moment for McLaren.

If you’re going off Drivers’ Championship betting odds alone, you’d say that the current Formula 1 season is a two-horse race between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, both driving for McLaren. Christian Horner seems to be of the same belief, too, and it’s easy to see why, as Piastri and Norris have dominated proceedings and are well ahead of the competition.

Red Bull and Max Verstappen, once the sport’s dominant force, have faded from the title conversation for now due to ongoing reliability issues and a lack of pace compared to McLaren. Verstappen’s recent DNF in Austria at the Red Bull Ring has only served to widen the gap between him and the two McLaren drivers.

There have been flashes of competitiveness from Ferrari and Mercedes, but neither has consistently challenged the McLaren duo. With Piastri and Norris trading wins and podiums, while executing team strategies flawlessly, McLaren have found the balance between raw speed and tactical excellence.

So, unless Red Bull find a solution quickly or Ferrari mount a mid-season challenge, it could be a two-horse race from here on in, with the internal battle something to keep an eye on.

As the British Grand Prix approaches, you’d argue that everyone is waiting to see who runs out as the eventual winner between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. However, Formula 1 is unpredictable at the best of times, and there will be drivers looking to throw a spanner in the works at Silverstone.

Oscar Piastri

As you’d expect, Oscar Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris are the favourites to win at Silverstone. Piastri, who is top of the standings, will be eager to get back to winning ways after two races without victory. He needs to extend his lead over Norris.

Lando Norris

Lando Norris wasn’t happy after crashing out in Canada, and he used that as motivation to win the Austrian Grand Prix. In doing so, he closed the gap on teammate Piastri and moved further away from Max Verstappen’s challenge. Norris is in form, and this is his home circuit.

Max Verstappen

At times, it looks like Max Verstappen is ready to compete. However, there have been too many setbacks and a lack of consistency, and it’s costing the defending champion dearly. He quite simply has to win races and do so regularly to get back into the mix, or his title will slip away.

George Russell

We’re including George Russell as the final contender, even though Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished ahead of him in Austria. The reason Russell is a contender is that he’s a consistent performer, a winner, and a Brit. He’ll be keen to do the business in front of home support.

McLaren Back In Control

After George Russell won in Canada, people were suggesting this was the moment the season would change and McLaren would lose their grip on the championship. However, following Lando Norris’ recent victory, McLaren look to have things back under total control, and a win at Silverstone could be defining.

It’s Now Or Never For Red Bull

Following Christian Horner’s comments, it’s potentially a now-or-never scenario for Red Bull, and more specifically, Max Verstappen. He’s losing ground on Piastri and Norris, so he must strike back so he can claw himself back into the reckoning.

Are Ferrari Ready To Make Their Move

After well-documented struggles so far this season, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished third in Austria, and teammate Lewis Hamilton was fourth. Are they gaining consistency? And could this come to the fore at Silverstone?

Silverstone is very much a true driver’s circuit—an 18-turn, 5.891km high-speed flow where 80% of the lap is full throttle. Fast sequences like Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel demand precision, confidence and composure through rapid direction changes.

At the same time, the abrasive surface and relentless lateral loads make tyre degradation a huge challenge. Frequent pit stops are possible because the pit-lane time loss is short, and two DRZ zones aid overtaking on this sweeping layout. Add in the unpredictable British weather, and you’ve got a real race on your hands, and a test for all involved.

The picture at the top of the Drivers’ Standings never really looked like changing anytime soon, and it hasn’t, especially following Lando Norris’ win in Austria. McLaren are in total control, and it’s becoming a two-horse race between Norris and Oscar Piastri.

After Norris’ win in Austria, sports betting sites not only have him right back in the race for the title, but the Brit is also joint favourite to win at Silverstone too, alongside Piastri. If both make the podium, they will strengthen McLaren’s grip.
