Solheim Cup Winners List- Every Winner from 1990 – 2023

solheim cup winners list

Although fans of LIV Golf will try to convince you otherwise, there are only three team events in professional golf that really matter: the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup in the men’s game, as well as the Solheim Cup in the women’s.

Golfers are, by their very nature, comfortable in playing for themselves – be it to leave a lasting legacy, to win as many tournaments as possible or, whisper it, because the money is so good.

But you put these individualists in the team environment and it’s like a bunch of wild animals have been unleashed – search on YouTube for the most controversial moments in the Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup to see what we mean.

That intensity makes the battle for Solheim Cup points all the more fun to watch, and with a long history of Solheim Cup past winners to call upon, punters also have plenty of insight upon which to base their bets.

To help get you in the mood for this biennial spectacle, let’s take a look at the Solheim Cup teams and the event’s past champions.

Solheim Cup Winners List

For the uninitiated, there are two Solheim Cup teams: one made up of players representing the United States, and another that proudly represents Europe.

The teams play each other over three days of action, with four-balls, foursomes and singles rubbers used to determine who will lift the trophy after the final putt has been rolled home.

One of the reasons that this event is so fascinating to watch is that the Solheim Cup winners list features Team USA and Team Europe in almost equal measure – in 18 editions since 1990, the Americans lead 10-7 (with one tie).

And of the 18, only five have been won by a margin of five points or more – this is a truly competitive event for the ages.

Team USA

When you look at the history of Solheim Cup matches, it’s clear that there has been a recent shift away from the previous American dominance.

Team USA were declared Solheim Cup winners in eight of the first eleven editions of the tournament, including the inaugural hosting in 1990 at Florida’s Lake Nona Golf & Country Club.

The Americans have won three Solheim Cups in a row on two separate occasions – the first time, between 1994-1998, came at a time when the incomparable Juli Inkster; she still holds the record for the most singles points won by any individual player in the event’s history.

The second dose of Team America dominance came between 2005 and 2009, where their hat-trick was powered by the exploits of Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer in particular – with 21 and 19.5 points respectively, they are the most prolific players from the United States since the foundation of the Solheim Cup.

But the Americans haven’t had their hands on the trophy since 2017; they will be desperate to make that right in Virginia later this year.

Team Europe

Although they were slow to get started, Team Europe hasn’t looked back – with four victories in the past seven editions, they have finally taken to the ‘winners of Solheim Cup’ tag.

The reigning champion also holds onto the trophy in the event of a tie, so the unforgettable 14-14 stalemate in 2023 means that the Europeans have enjoyed a monopoly on the Solheim Cup since 2017.

Key to that success have been the likes of Suzann Pettersen, first as a player and then as a captain in 2023, Leona Maguire and Carlota Ciganda, who have racked up the points in both the singles and pairs formats.

The most successful captain of the European squad in the Solheim Cup is Catriona Matthew, who is the only person to skipper the team in blue to two victories, while the most decorated player is Laura Davies – her extraordinary career in the competition spanning two decades and the clinching of a whopping 25 points.
