League Cup Betting & Odds

League Cup Betting and Odds at BetVictor, for all the best in English Football action. The League Cup is the first major trophy in the English Football calendar. With the final taking place prior to the end of the season, it can be a springboard for clubs to dominate. In times gone by top-flight clubs would field reserve line-ups in this competition. But it's now firmly a trophy of significance for Premier League clubs - just ask Man City and Pep Guardiola. It's also a competition we at BetVictor take seriously. And that's reflected in our League Cup Betting and Odds.

Just like the FA Cup, the League Cup is a knockout competition. However, it isn't open to all English clubs like its counterpart. Only the 20 Premier League sides and 72 EFL teams compete for the trophy each season.

At BetVictor, we’ll be involved in the action with a broad range of League Cup Betting Markets. We’ll have League Cup Odds on every single match from the first round right the way through to the big Wembley final.

History of the League Cup

The League was formed in 1960 and initially drew criticism because some Premier League clubs tended to use it to field younger players, rather than first choice line-ups. For this reason, many football pundits and managers dismissed the league as a lesser competition.

But try telling the likes of Leicester, Blackburn, Middlesbrough, Birmingham and Swansea that this competition doesn't matter. Each of those sides have gone on to win it in the Premier League era. And that list of underdog winners adds a new layer to League Cup Betting Markets.

However, since the turn of the century, the big boys began to view it as a trophy they fancied getting their hands on. Man United used it as a springboard to re-establish success. Their win in 2006 ended a mini trophy draught and set them on their path to Premier League and Champions League victories. Meanwhile, Man City scooped it up as the first prize in their domestic treble in 2019.

That was City’s sixth League Cup triumph and their fourth since 2014. They've continued to dominate since and have now won the last 4 League Cup’s. That makes them the competition's most successful side along with Liverpool. Man Utd, Aston Villa, and Chelsea are just behind the pair with five titles each.

League Cup Structure and Rounds

The League Cup has undergone many name changes changes over the years. But its basic format has broadly remained the same.

Round One includes sides from the Championship down to League Two. Most top-flight clubs join in Round Two, although Premier League teams playing in Europe are exempt at this stage. This can be great time to bet on the League Cup - the addition of Premier League clubs creates the potential for upsets.

Round Three brings the Premier League big hitters into the fray. The single match format continues in that round, Round Four, and the quarter-finals. The semi-finals are played over two legs, home and away. This ramps up the excitement for the final four clubs involved.

Wembley has been the home of the final since 1967, with clubs desperate to lift the trophy under the famous arch.
