EFL Trophy Overview

Since beginning life in the 1980s, the EFL Trophy has undergone a few format changes to become the competition we know and love today.

Currently, the league and knock-out tournament are made up of the 48 teams in League One and League Two as well as 16 Category 1 Premier League and EFL Championship Academy/Under 21 teams. The competition kicks off with 16 regional groups of four, with the top two from each group making their way into the knockout stages.

There are two rounds of regional knock-out fixtures before the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

History of the EFL Trophy

Established in 1983-84 as the Associate Members Cup, the EFL Trophy has always featured English and Welsh teams competing in the third and fourth tiers of the English Football League.

There have been significant structural changes down the years including changes in the group format and the introduction of Conference Teams. These teams from outside the Football League were restricted in 2006-07, with the latest change and the introduction of Academy sides occurring in the 2016-17 season.

The most successful club in EFL Trophy history is Bristol City, while Portsmouth are the current champions winning it for the first time in 2019. To be fair their fans also tasted FA Cup glory not too long ago!
