An outright bet is placed on the eventual result of a competition or season-long contest. Rather than asking who wins on Saturday, it asks who will be champion in May, finish in a particular group of positions or score the most league goals.

The market may remain open after the season begins. That gives bettors a chance to take a view before the first ball is kicked or wait until there is evidence from several games. Neither route removes the uncertainty. An August selection offers less form to study, while waiting can mean accepting a very different price.

PSG sit at the head of the Ligue 1 title betting at the time of writing. No shock there. Luis Enrique has overseen the last two triumphs in a run of five, and the most recent one raised the club's record total to 14.

Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia bring the headline quality. The harder part for their rivals is PSG's ability to rotate without tearing up the entire team, particularly once European knockout nights begin competing for attention.

Lens supplied the resistance last season. They finished six points behind PSG and won the Coupe de France, turning an excellent year into something tangible. The question now is whether a squad facing Champions League football and a managerial change can repeat that consistency.

Lens have the strongest recent league finish, Lille qualified through third place and Lyon ended one point behind them. Marseille and Rennes were level on points, while Monaco have the resources to recover from a disappointing campaign. It is not a market to solve through badge size alone.

European schedules deserve attention. Thursday football followed by a Sunday league game is a different problem from a clear training week. As winter arrives, the depth of the bench can matter every bit as much as the ideal starting eleven.

There are 18 places in the table and three danger spots, although they do not all work alike. Seventeenth and 18th mean automatic relegation. Sixteenth brings a play-off, making the settlement wording important before backing a club for the drop.

The two unfamiliar names this season are Troyes and Le Mans. Troyes won Ligue 2, while Le Mans finally returned after 16 years outside the top flight. Neither should be written off simply for being promoted. Both, however, must adjust to quicker football and opponents with deeper squads.

Do not limit the research to the newcomers. An established Ligue 1 side can slide into trouble after losing key players, changing manager or beginning badly. Home form is often crucial because a team that cannot collect points against nearby rivals quickly runs out of forgiving fixtures.

Last year's goals did not belong to a PSG forward. Estéban Lepaul scored 21 times for Rennes and stood alone above the 20-goal mark. It was a useful reminder to look beyond the shortest-priced team when studying this market.

January is another turning point. One well-judged signing can repair a weak area, while selling an important player may leave a club exposed for the second half of the campaign.

The pattern is difficult to miss. Still, PSG have been interrupted before: Lille broke through in 2020/21, Monaco in 2016/17 and Montpellier produced the great modern shock back in 2011/12.
