An MLS season has two very different tests: earning a place in the play-offs and then surviving them. That gives every fixture a wider context, whether a club is chasing home advantage or trying to stay above the qualification line. Major League Soccer is the top division in the United States and Canada. It began in 1996 and now has 30 clubs, with San Diego FC joining the competition in 2025. The league stretches from Montréal to Los Angeles, making travel, time zones and the fixture schedule part of the picture.

Inter Miami are the defending MLS Cup champions after beating Vancouver Whitecaps 3–1 in the 2025 final. Their title is decided by the play-offs; finishing with the best regular-season record earns a separate trophy.

In 2026, the Eastern and Western Conferences each contain 15 clubs. Every team plays 34 regular-season matches, split equally between home and away. Conference opponents meet twice, with six further games against teams from the other conference.

The schedule is therefore different from a league in which every club faces every other side home and away. When comparing records across the two conferences, look at the opponents behind the points total.

Decision Day, the final day of the 2026 regular season, is scheduled for 7 November. MLS Cup follows on 18 December, with the finalist holding the better regular-season record hosting the championship match.

MLS Is Changing Its Calendar

The 2026 format should not be carried forward unchanged. MLS has announced a shorter Sprint Season for February to May 2027, featuring 14 regular-season matches per club and a separate play-off competition.

The league then moves to a summer-to-spring calendar for 2027/28. Check the season named on any outright selection, particularly when markets for different campaigns appear together.

Open an MLS fixture to see its current markets and prices. Match result, both teams to score, goals totals and handicaps cover different opinions about the same game. Additional selections depend on the fixture.

Match Result, Double Chance and Draw No Bet

Match result offers home win, draw or away win. Standard settlement covers 90 minutes plus stoppage time, leaving extra time and penalties out of the result unless the market says otherwise.

Double chance combines two outcomes. A home-or-draw selection wins with either of those results and loses with an away victory. Draw no bet instead backs one team, with your stake normally returned if the match finishes level.

Think about what your prediction actually is. Expecting a side to avoid defeat is a different view from expecting it to win, and the price reflects the conditions attached to each selection.

Both Teams to Score and Total Goals

BTTS asks whether both sides will score during the stated period. A 1–1 draw and a 4–1 home win both settle “Yes”. A 3–0 result settles “No”, despite containing more goals than the draw.

Total goals counts the combined score. Over 2.5 needs three or more goals; under 2.5 covers anything below that. You do not need to name the winner.

MLS can produce open games, but a memorable high-scoring weekend is no reason to approach every fixture the same way. Check which attackers are available and whether either side’s recent scores came against unusually strong or weak opposition.

Correct Score and Half-Time/Full-Time

Correct score narrows the prediction to an exact result. Backing 2–1 requires that score at the end of the specified period, not simply a home win with both teams scoring.

Half-time/full-time asks for the result at two stages. A draw/home selection needs the teams level at the interval and the home side ahead at full time. An early goal can change the first part of that bet long before the final result is settled.

Handicaps adjust the score for betting purposes. On a minus 1.5 line, your chosen side needs to win by at least two goals. Plus 1.5 allows it to win, draw or lose by a single goal.

Whole-goal handicaps need a closer look. An Asian minus-one selection normally returns the stake after a one-goal win. In a three-way minus-one market, that same margin produces the handicap draw instead.

Check both the number and the type of market. They tell you what your team needs to do.

Goalscorer, Cards and Corners Markets

Selected fixtures may include anytime or first goalscorer bets, alongside cards and corners. A player’s reputation is only part of a goalscorer assessment: starting status, expected minutes and penalty duties all matter.

Read the participation rules before placing a player bet. For cards and corners, check whether the selection concerns one player, one team or the match total, as well as the period it covers.

Our MLS Cup winner odds focus on the team that wins the championship through the play-offs. A win-only selection needs to lift the trophy. Reaching the final is not enough.

An early bet can remain open for months. During that time, injuries, transfers and the emerging play-off route may change the odds. A price taken earlier is not automatically better than one available later.

Other outright markets may include conference outcomes or the leading goalscorer. Check whether a conference bet concerns regular-season standings or the postseason winner. Likewise, a regular-season top-scorer market should not be confused with one that includes play-off goals.

MLS Cup vs Supporters’ Shield

The Supporters’ Shield rewards the best regular-season record across MLS. MLS Cup belongs to the team that wins the postseason championship.

The distinction matters on the bet slip. A club can finish ahead of the entire league and still go out in the play-offs. Equally, a team can win MLS Cup after qualifying from further down its conference.

League form remains useful for a Cup assessment because it influences qualification and seeding. It simply does not settle the same question.

Each-Way MLS Betting

Where available, each-way betting puts an equal stake on a win selection and a place selection. A £5 each-way bet therefore costs £10.

Check the displayed place terms. If they cover the two finalists, a losing finalist can return the place part while the win part loses. Whether that return covers the full £10 depends on the odds and place fraction.

Do not assume the terms will stay the same throughout the season. Read them again when placing a new bet.

MLS Play-Off Betting: Know the Round

Nine clubs from each conference qualify for the 2026 postseason. Eighth and ninth meet in a Wild Card match, while the top seven go directly into Round One.

Round One uses best-of-three series. The first team to win twice advances; the scores are not added together as an aggregate tie. A heavy defeat in one game counts as one loss, just as a narrow defeat does.

Wild Card and Round One games go straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes. From the Conference Semi-finals onwards, the format becomes single elimination, with extra time before penalties when needed.

For bettors, the question is whether the selection covers one match, the series or progression. A team that wins a shoot-out has won the game for play-off purposes, but its standard 90-minute match-result selection remains a draw.

Miami’s first title followed LA Galaxy’s record sixth success in 2024. The recent finals show several different routes to the same trophy.

Past titles tell you about a club’s history. For the next fixture, the current line-up and recent performances deserve more weight than a trophy won by a different squad.

Cash Out may be offered on eligible bets, but neither its availability nor the amount is guaranteed. A bet should make sense to you without depending on an early exit later.

Start by separating home and away results. A club collecting points at its own ground may have a very different record on the road. Then check the journey and recovery time before the next match, particularly when a midweek fixture leaves little room between games.

Team news comes next. A missing striker is easy to notice; changes at centre-back or in holding midfield may receive less attention while still affecting how the side plays. International call-ups and other cup commitments can also influence selection.

Rivalries such as LA Galaxy against LAFC, or Seattle against Portland, bring their own history. That history does not guarantee goals, cards or a particular result. Assess the current fixture on its own terms.

For UK supporters, check the displayed time zone and calendar date. An evening kick-off in North America can fall after midnight in Britain.
