Every club meets the other 23 teams at home and away. That produces a 46-game regular season, which began on Saturday 8 August 2026 and is scheduled to finish on Saturday 24 April 2027.

First place brings the title and automatic promotion to League Two. Teams finishing second to seventh enter the play-offs, but their routes are not equal.

Second and third receive byes into one-legged semi-finals and host those matches. Fourth plays seventh in an eliminator, while fifth hosts sixth. The two surviving clubs then visit the teams that finished second and third. Win again and Wembley awaits in the Promotion Final.

At the other end, the bottom four drop to National League North or National League South. Geography helps decide which division receives each relegated club, so the destination is not based only on league position.

The National League winner market is settled on the team that finishes first after 46 games. Winning the play-offs does not count, because that club earns promotion without being crowned league champion.

A separate promotion market covers both routes into League Two. A selection can finish top or come through the play-offs, making this a broader wager than the title market.

Boreham Wood came painfully close in May. Their run ended in the Promotion Final as Rochdale recovered from two goals down and reclaimed an EFL place. That experience could help, although the opening months will show whether disappointment has sharpened the squad or lingered.

Hartlepool and Southend are two more former League clubs trying to climb back. Both carry support and expectations that belong higher up the pyramid, but the National League has never handed out points for reputation.

Forest Green, Scunthorpe and Yeovil also deserve attention behind the early leaders. A good start can move National League outright odds quickly because every contender knows how costly a long winless run can become.

York City and Rochdale turned the title race into something extraordinary. They reached the final day with more than 100 points each and met one another knowing automatic promotion was still undecided.

Rochdale had to recover for the play-offs despite finishing on 106. They did exactly that, eventually meeting Boreham Wood at Wembley and winning the Promotion Final after coming back from two goals behind.

At the bottom, Brackley Town, Morecambe, Braintree Town and Truro City were relegated. They have been replaced by Harrogate and Barrow from League Two, plus AFC Fylde, Kidderminster Harriers, Worthing and Hornchurch from the regional divisions.

Five different teams have won the title across the last five completed seasons.

All five champions earned automatic promotion. The play-off winner joined each of them in League Two, underlining why the promotion and title markets should not be treated as identical bets.

Squad depth matters more here than it may first appear. Forty-six league fixtures are joined by FA Cup and FA Trophy matches, while postponements can produce an awkward pile-up later in the season.

Away form is another useful test. Long journeys, unfamiliar grounds and midweek matches can expose a team that looks convincing at home. The eventual champion normally needs to collect points on poor nights as well as good ones.

Keep an eye on goals too. A reliable striker can transform a promotion campaign, but dependence on one player creates obvious risk if injury or suspension arrives.

The January window often changes the picture. EFL clubs may recall loan players, while National League contenders can strengthen for the run-in. A team sitting outside the top seven at Christmas is not necessarily finished if the gap remains small.

Finally, separate a title challenge from a play-off push. Second place and seventh both enter the post-season, yet the runner-up receives a shorter route and home advantage. Finishing position still matters after first place has gone.
