The Ryder Cup is one of the most highly anticipated events in golf and is also one of the few tournaments in which players don't compete on their own. This infamous event pits golfers from the USA against their European counterparts, with plenty of pride being on the line for all players involved.

In addition to this tournament being team-based, it also revolves around three different formats which makes it enjoyable for spectators. For many, the highlight is the four-ball section, as this format allows players to go all-out and try risky shots that in solo play, they would likely avoid.

If you want to bet on the Ryder Cup 2025, BetVictor has got you covered. We have comprehensive coverage of the Ryder Cup, with a huge selection of golf betting odds for you to choose from!

What is the Ryder Cup?

The Ryder Cup is a golfing competition that began in 1927 as a match between American and British players. The event grew in stature when continental European players joined the British team in 1979, with this format being kept until the present day.

It occurs every two years, with the next iteration scheduled to get underway on the 25th of September 2025, with the winner being crowned on the 28th. One of the standout features about this golfing event is that it revolves around match play rather than stroke play, as teams battle it out over three days in foursomes, four-ball and singles matches to claim the famous trophy.

Ryder Cup Format

As mentioned, the Ryder Cup matches test golfers in three unique formats, with each match showing off a different skill while also adding to the overall entertainment offered by the event. These three formats are:

  • Four-Ball - Four-ball matches let each golfer play their own ball, with the best score from each team counting on each hole. Often, four-ball will lead to some players opting for safe approaches, while others use the safety net associated with the format to play riskier shots.
  • Foursomes - Foursomes pairs two players who take turns hitting the same ball, making teamwork vital for success. This format is typically most nerve-racking for players, as their teammate is directly relying on them to make a good shot.
  • Singles - These pit players from Team Europe against players from Team USA, with this stage of the competition often being the most impactful in terms of the final result of the Ryder Cup.

Scoring System

The Ryder Cup uses a simple point system that makes the matches as entertaining as possible, while also eliminating complications so that anyone can enjoy the action, regardless of their golfing knowledge. Each match win gives a team one full point for their total score, unless the match is a tie, in which case both teams get half a point.

There are a total of 28 points up for grabs in the Ryder Cup, meaning that the first team to reach 14.5 points will win the entire tournament. Unlike in other golfing events, there are also no playoffs and should the final score end in a 14-14 tie, the team that currently holds the trophy keeps it. In the 2025 iteration of the event, this would be Europe.

Regularly, the championship comes down to the final few singles matches on Sunday, which is why teams must plan their player order carefully to maximise their chances of winning. For example, some golfers tend to perform worse under pressure, with these players typically being used early on in the singles portion of the event, so the whole tournament isn't riding on their shoulders.

It's also worth mentioning that the pressure itself is often amplified during the Ryder Cup, as golfers aren't just playing for themselves, but their teammates and country or continent too!
