Five years of waiting. Sixty-nine seconds of fighting. Conor McGregor’s long-awaited UFC return ended almost as soon as it began after the Irishman suffered a right knee injury against Max Holloway at UFC 329.
McGregor opened the rematch with a jumping kick, landed awkwardly on his right leg and immediately looked unsteady. He tried to fight through it, but the knee would not support him. Holloway was eventually awarded a first-round TKO victory at 1:09.
It was a brutal ending to the comeback covered in our UFC 329 full card, odds and UK start time. Below, we explain what happened to Conor McGregor, why the fight was stopped, the latest injury update and what the result means for both fighters. What Happened to Conor McGregor at UFC 329?
McGregor’s first UFC fight since July 2021 began with a statement of intent. He charged forward and threw a jumping kick almost immediately, looking to start quickly after the longest layoff of his professional career.
The problem came on the landing. McGregor’s weight went through his right leg, his knee appeared to buckle and his movement changed straight away. He briefly dropped, returned to his feet and attempted to continue, but he could no longer move normally or trust the leg beneath him.
Holloway recognised that something was wrong. Rather than rushing an opponent who was clearly compromised, he backed away and drew the referee’s attention to the injury. McGregor tried to reset again, but the leg gave way and the contest was waved off.
The official ending came at 1:09 of the opening round. Holloway won by TKO due to a knee injury, while McGregor’s comeback was over before either fighter had the chance to settle into the contest.
Why Was McGregor vs Holloway Stopped?
The fight was stopped because McGregor could no longer compete safely or defend himself properly on the injured leg. In MMA, a referee does not need to wait for a fighter to be knocked unconscious. If an injury leaves someone unable to protect themselves or continue intelligently, the bout can be ended immediately.
That is why the finish was recorded as a TKO rather than a no-contest. Holloway did not cause the injury with a legal strike, but he still receives the victory because it happened during the bout and McGregor could not continue. Our full guide to UFC rules explains the different ways a contest can finish and why fighter safety comes first.
It was the correct stoppage. McGregor wanted to carry on, but his balance and mobility had gone. Allowing Holloway to attack an opponent who could not plant, retreat or defend properly would only have increased the risk of further damage.
UFC 329 Result: Max Holloway Defeats Conor McGregor
Holloway’s victory levels the rivalry at one win each. McGregor won their first meeting by unanimous decision in 2013, while Holloway now owns the official victory in the rematch.
The fight ended only 69 seconds into a scheduled five-round main event. For context, a standard UFC round lasts five minutes; our guide to how long a UFC round lasts breaks down the full format, championship rounds and the differences between main events and regular bouts.
The result will always carry an asterisk in the minds of many fans because Holloway had almost no opportunity to impose his game. Officially, however, it is a TKO win and the first defeat of McGregor’s career against Holloway.
What Injury Did Conor McGregor Suffer?
The confirmed description at the time of writing is a right knee injury. The precise damage has not yet been formally announced.
UFC CEO Dana White said the initial fear from the medical team was an ACL tear, but added that an MRI would be needed before the diagnosis could be confirmed. That distinction matters: a suspected torn ACL is not the same as a confirmed torn ACL.
Until McGregor, his team or the UFC publishes the scan result, it would be premature to give the injury a definitive label. The awkward landing may have damaged one ligament, several structures around the knee or something less severe than the first assessment suggested. The MRI will determine the real recovery timeline.
For now, the most accurate summary is that McGregor suffered a serious right knee injury and was awaiting further testing after UFC 329.
Did McGregor Enter UFC 329 Already Injured?
There is no confirmed evidence that McGregor entered the fight with a pre-existing knee injury. Footage recorded before the bout led some supporters to claim he looked uncomfortable, but a short video cannot establish a medical diagnosis.
McGregor strongly denied the theory. He said he had been throwing planted and jumping kicks throughout his training camp and backstage before the fight, and described the injury as something that came without warning. His long-time coach John Kavanagh also said the knee had not been an issue during preparation.
White supported that account, saying there had been no visible sign of a problem during fight week. Unless new medical information emerges, the fairest conclusion is that the injury occurred when McGregor landed awkwardly after the opening kick.
Was It the Same Leg McGregor Broke Against Dustin Poirier?
No. McGregor broke his left tibia and fibula against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021. The injury against Holloway at UFC 329 affected his right knee.
There is another unusual connection between the two Holloway fights. McGregor tore the ACL in his left knee during their first meeting in 2013 and still completed the fight to win a decision. Thirteen years later, the rematch ended because of an injury to the opposite knee.
This was therefore not a repeat of the 2021 leg break and not the same knee McGregor injured during the original Holloway fight.
What Did Conor McGregor Say After the Injury?
McGregor left the arena without completing the usual post-fight interview and later addressed the injury on social media. He described himself as devastated, denied carrying an injury into the contest and repeated that the landing problem had come without warning.
Despite the emotion of the moment, he also made his intention clear: “I will return.” That does not guarantee another UFC appearance, but it shows retirement is not currently his public plan.
The next meaningful update will be medical rather than emotional. Once the MRI result is known, McGregor and his team will be able to assess the rehabilitation ahead and whether another full UFC comeback is realistic.
What Did Max Holloway Say About the Stoppage?
Holloway said he noticed McGregor’s demeanour and movement change after the injury. He alerted the referee and resisted the urge to rush forward against an opponent who was clearly unable to move properly.
The former featherweight champion was disappointed by the ending, but he did not dismiss a third fight. With the head-to-head record now level at one victory each, Holloway indicated that the UFC could revisit the rivalry after McGregor recovers.
Whether that happens will depend entirely on McGregor’s diagnosis, recovery and willingness to complete another training camp. The commercial interest would be enormous, but the sporting case cannot be judged until his knee is healthy.
Will Conor McGregor Fight Again?
McGregor says he will return, but there is no confirmed comeback date. At 37, following five years away and injury stoppages in consecutive UFC appearances, this is now a much larger question than simply choosing his next opponent.
If the scan confirms a serious ligament tear, the recovery would be measured in months rather than weeks and another fight in 2026 would appear highly unlikely. A less severe diagnosis could change the outlook, but the UFC will not book him again until he is medically cleared.
There is also the question of who he would face. A Holloway trilogy has an obvious story, while the long-discussed Michael Chandler fight may still carry interest. For now, every possible matchup is secondary to the diagnosis.
What Happens Next After UFC 329?
Holloway leaves UFC 329 with an official win, even if it was not the statement victory he wanted. McGregor leaves with another period of uncertainty and a medical scan that could shape the remainder of his career.
