The finish came 1:48 into round two as Nurmagomedov lowered his level looking for a takedown. Song read the movement, fired the uppercut through the middle and left the former UFC title challenger unconscious on the canvas.
It was a huge result for the bantamweight division. Umar entered the fight as a clear favourite and looked to be moving back towards another title opportunity, but one brilliantly prepared counter changed everything.
What made the knockout even more interesting was Song’s explanation afterwards. His team had spotted a tendency in Umar’s takedown entries and spent training camp working specifically on the uppercut that eventually ended the fight.

Umar arrived in Shanghai looking to continue rebuilding after his title defeat to Merab Dvalishvili.
The opening round was competitive. Song was willing to engage on the feet and also dealt reasonably well with the early grappling exchanges, preventing Umar from settling into the type of controlled fight many expected.

Nurmagomedov did not make excuses for what happened.
His reaction was relatively measured, particularly given the manner of the defeat. He confirmed that he was physically okay, thanked those who had supported him and spoke about correcting the mistakes that led to the finish.

There was also some confusion immediately after the knockout involving Umar’s brother, Usman.
After seeing Umar unconscious, Usman tried to enter the Octagon before officials had cleared the area. Khabib Nurmagomedov could be seen attempting to hold him back, although Usman eventually made his way inside.
Song was celebrating at the same time and the two briefly collided, which led to some clips online being interpreted as a confrontation.
Usman later denied trying to attack Song and explained that his only concern in the moment was getting to his brother.
The situation did not develop into anything more serious and should probably be viewed in the context of an emotional few seconds after a frightening knockout.
Why Was Song Yadong Beating Umar Such a Big Upset?
Umar had been viewed as one of the strongest bantamweights in the UFC for several years.
Even after losing his first title fight, he remained close to the top of the division and had already beaten experienced contenders including Cory Sandhagen, Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo.
A win over Song could have put him within touching distance of another championship opportunity.
Instead, Song completely changed the picture.
The Chinese contender had already shown that he could compete with elite opposition, but beating Umar in this fashion is a different level of statement. It was not a close decision or a narrow tactical win. He found a technical weakness and finished one of the division’s most highly rated fighters.

Will Song Yadong Get a UFC Title Shot?
He has made a very strong case. Song has now beaten one of the highest-ranked contenders in the division and did so with the kind of finish that is difficult for the UFC to ignore.
The bantamweight title picture is still complicated, though.
Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili are due to meet again at UFC 333, while several other contenders remain close to the top. Song may therefore need to wait for that fight before knowing exactly where he stands.
He has already made it clear that he wants the winner.
A rematch with Yan would also carry some history after Song lost their first meeting by decision. If Merab wins, Song would offer a very different striking challenge.
Either way, the knockout has moved him much closer to the belt than he was before Shanghai.
What Does the Loss Mean for Umar Nurmagomedov?
The defeat is a major setback, but it does not suddenly remove Umar from the elite level of the bantamweight division.
What changes is his position in the title queue.
Before Shanghai, another championship opportunity looked realistic with one or two more wins. Song has now taken that momentum for himself, while Umar is likely to need another high-level victory before he can move back towards the belt.
The manner of the defeat may also encourage future opponents to study his takedown entries more closely.
Once a weakness has been exposed on such a big stage, everyone notices.
That does not mean Umar suddenly needs to abandon the wrestling game that has brought him so much success. The challenge will be disguising his entries better and making opponents less comfortable preparing counters around them.
Who Could Umar Nurmagomedov Fight Next?
There is no confirmed opponent yet, and much will depend on how the updated bantamweight rankings look.
An immediate Song rematch seems unlikely. Song has far more to gain by looking upwards towards the title rather than repeating a fight he just won by knockout.
Umar could instead be matched against another contender around the top five or top 10.
Names such as Cory Sandhagen or another established bantamweight could make sense depending on availability, although there is no reason for the UFC to rush the booking after Umar’s first knockout defeat.
A strong win in his return would quickly restore much of the momentum lost in Shanghai.

Can Umar Nurmagomedov Still Become UFC Champion?
Yes. One knockout loss does not erase everything Umar has already shown.
His grappling remains among the strongest in the division, he has already beaten high-level opposition and he is still capable of causing serious problems for almost any bantamweight on the roster. The loss does change one thing, though.
For a long time, Umar’s path towards becoming UFC champion was treated almost as an inevitability. The Dvalishvili defeat showed that he could be beaten over five hard rounds, while Song has now shown that he can also be punished during the entries that normally make his wrestling so effective.
How he adjusts will tell us far more about his championship potential than another comfortable win would have.
What Happens Next for Umar Nurmagomedov?
Umar now finds himself in unfamiliar territory. He has lost before, but never like this.
The immediate priority will be recovering fully before his team starts discussing another fight. After that, the focus should turn towards correcting the technical mistake Song exploited and rebuilding his position in a very competitive bantamweight division.
Song, meanwhile, moves in the opposite direction. The knockout has turned him from a respected contender into a realistic title challenger almost overnight. That is what one clean punch can do at this level.
