Umar Nurmagomedov is heading into hostile territory for his next step towards another UFC title shot.
The former bantamweight title challenger faces China’s Song Yadong at UFC Shanghai on Saturday 29 August 2026, with the pair meeting over five rounds at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. Better still for UK fans, there is no 4am alarm involved this time. The prelims begin at 8am BST, followed by the main card at 11am BST.
Nurmagomedov is the clear betting favourite, but Song has already produced one big home-country performance this year. He submitted former UFC champion Deiveson Figueiredo in Macau in May and now gets an even bigger opportunity in Shanghai.

Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong takes place on Saturday 29 August 2026 in Shanghai, China.
The fight headlines UFC Fight Night: Nurmagomedov vs Song, also listed as UFC Fight Night 286. It will be staged at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in the Pudong District.
For Song, the location is obviously significant. He fought in Macau only three months earlier and now gets another main event in China, this time against one of the toughest bantamweights on the roster.
Nurmagomedov will not care much about the atmosphere. A win would strengthen an already convincing argument that he belongs back in the championship conversation.
The latest UFC rankings have Nurmagomedov at No. 3 at bantamweight, with Song currently at No. 6.
What Time Is Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong in the UK?
This is one of those rare UFC cards where being a UK fan actually works in your favour.
The event is being held during prime time in Shanghai. UFC has announced a 3pm local start for the opening fights and a 6pm local start for the main card. That converts to:
- Prelims: 8am BST
- Main card: 11am BST
- Nurmagomedov vs Song: expected at roughly 1pm BST
The main event time is an estimate because it depends on how quickly the earlier fights finish. The first two timings are confirmed by the UFC schedule and ESPN’s UK event listing.
So instead of staying awake until sunrise, UK viewers can watch the whole thing across Saturday morning and early afternoon.
How to Watch UFC Shanghai in the UK
UFC Fight Nights are shown live on TNT Sports in the UK, with streaming available through HBO Max.
That includes UFC Shanghai. Unlike certain numbered UFC events, this is a Fight Night rather than a pay-per-view card, so it falls within the regular TNT Sports UFC offering. UFC Shanghai Fight Card
The Shanghai card has been built with plenty of Asian talent, which makes sense given the location.
China gets representation right through the event. Song headlines, Yan Xiaonan takes the co-main event, Aoriqileng faces former RIZIN champion Kai Asakura and Sumudaerji meets former UFC title challenger Alex Perez.

That is the current card listed ahead of the event, although UFC line-ups can change during fight week.
Umar Nurmagomedov’s Road Back From His First Defeat
For years, the interesting question around Umar Nurmagomedov was whether anybody could actually beat him.
Merab Dvalishvili finally provided the answer.
Nurmagomedov entered UFC 311 in January 2025 unbeaten and challenged Dvalishvili for the bantamweight championship. The opening stages were competitive, but Dvalishvili’s pace became a bigger problem as the fight developed. He eventually won by unanimous decision, with scores of 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46.
It remains the only defeat on Nurmagomedov’s professional record.
What happened afterwards probably tells us more about him.
He didn’t disappear after losing the zero. Nurmagomedov returned against Mario Bautista and won a clear decision, then handled Deiveson Figueiredo over three rounds at UFC 324 in January 2026.
He now arrives in Shanghai at 20-1.
The surname inevitably brings comparisons with Khabib, but Umar isn’t just a copy of his cousin. His striking game is much more varied. He is comfortable kicking from distance, switching attacks and making opponents think about several things before he ever starts wrestling.
Then the takedowns come.
Can Song Yadong Stop Umar’s Wrestling?
This is probably the question that decides the fight.
Nurmagomedov averages just over four takedowns per 15 minutes, while Song has defended roughly 75% of the takedowns attempted against him in the UFC.
That’s good defensive wrestling from Song.
It might need to be better than good here.
Umar does not always attack takedowns in isolation. He can kick, draw a reaction, close distance, work from the clinch and then start chaining attempts together. Defending the first shot doesn’t necessarily end the problem.
Once Nurmagomedov establishes top position, keeping opponents there is one of his biggest strengths. UFC’s current bantamweight statistics give him a 38.6% control-time rate, second among active fighters in the division who meet the qualifying threshold.
Song needs space.
If he spends long stretches backing towards the fence and fighting hands, the fight starts to look exactly how Nurmagomedov wants it to look.

Why Song Yadong Is Still Dangerous
The odds make Song a sizeable underdog, but there is a reason this fight is interesting.
He can hurt people.
Song has landed six UFC knockdowns and owns five knockout or TKO victories inside the promotion, putting him among the more dangerous established strikers at bantamweight.
He also lands at a higher rate than Nurmagomedov. ESPN’s current UFC statistics have Song landing 4.34 significant strikes per minute, compared with 3.86 for Umar.
What Song does well is make his punches count.
He is compact, quick and happy to commit when an opponent stays in the pocket. If Umar becomes lazy on an entry or hangs around after throwing a kick, Song has enough speed to punish him.
Then there is confidence.
Song’s January didn’t go his way. Sean O’Malley beat him by unanimous decision at UFC 324, with all three judges scoring it 29-28.
Four months later, Song looked far more decisive.
Against Figueiredo in Macau, he didn’t just outpoint the former flyweight champion. Song caught him in a guillotine and forced the submission with 18 seconds remaining in the second round.
That took his professional record to 23-9-1 and gave him exactly the sort of result he needed before facing another elite contender.
Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong Odds
The market isn’t expecting an upset.
At the time of writing, BetVictor has Umar Nurmagomedov at 2/9 to win, while Song Yadong is 7/2. Those prices were checked on 13 August 2026 and can change before fight night.
That is a sizeable gap for a main event involving two top-six bantamweights.
Nurmagomedov’s grappling, defensive numbers and 20-1 record explain much of it. Outside the Dvalishvili defeat, nobody has really found a consistent answer to his style.
Song’s outright price will appeal more to anyone expecting the home fighter’s boxing and power to cause problems, but backing the underdog means trusting him to stay upright for long enough to make those weapons matter.

Where Can Song Win the Fight?
Song’s route is easier to describe than it is to execute.
Stay off the fence. Make Umar reset. Punish the entries.
If he can force long sections of the fight to take place at boxing range, things become much more uncomfortable for the favourite.
Nurmagomedov absorbs only around 1.91 significant strikes per minute, one of the better defensive rates among active UFC bantamweights, so simply throwing more will not be enough.
Song needs to make Umar pay when he does commit.
Body work could help. So could attacking immediately after defended takedowns, rather than using that moment simply to escape.
Most importantly, Song cannot afford to lose three quiet rounds because Umar spent two minutes controlling him against the cage.

Where Can Nurmagomedov Win the Fight?
Umar has more routes.
That is the problem for Song.
He does not need to dominate every striking exchange because the threat of the takedown changes those exchanges anyway. Song has to think about kicks, level changes and clinches at the same time.
Nurmagomedov can also afford to be patient.
This is a five-round fight. Chasing a finish early would give Song the type of messy exchange he probably wants. Umar’s cleaner path is to make Song defend, make him stand back up, then ask him to do it again.
There is a cumulative effect to that style.
Song’s takedown defence could look excellent in round one and much less impressive after 15 or 20 minutes of hand fighting and getting dragged away from the centre.
The Dvalishvili fight showed Nurmagomedov isn’t invincible in a high-paced five-round contest. It also showed what sort of fighter it took to beat him.
Song does not fight like Merab.
He needs to find another answer.
Umar Nurmagomedov vs Song Yadong Prediction
I like Umar Nurmagomedov by decision.
Song is dangerous enough that I wouldn’t treat the 2/9 outright price as proof this will be easy. Fighting him in China adds another layer, and Song’s combination of takedown defence and genuine punching power gives him a route to the upset.
I just don’t think he gets enough time in his preferred kind of fight.
Nurmagomedov can strike without desperately needing to wrestle, which makes his grappling even harder to prepare for. If Song starts waiting for the shot, Umar can kick. If Song gets more aggressive, the level change becomes available.
That’s a horrible balance to maintain for five rounds.
Song has also proved difficult to finish. Even against high-level bantamweights such as Petr Yan, Sean O’Malley and Cory Sandhagen, he has generally made opponents work for everything.
That makes the scorecards more appealing to me than a submission.
I expect Song to have moments, particularly early. The longer the fight goes, though, Nurmagomedov should begin dictating where the exchanges happen. Takedowns, cage work and the cleaner defensive game can gradually take rounds away from the home favourite.
Prediction: Umar Nurmagomedov to win by unanimous decision.
What Does the Winner Get?
There isn’t a belt on the line in Shanghai, but this hardly feels like an ordinary Fight Night main event.
Nurmagomedov has already fought for UFC gold once. At No. 3 in the division, another win over a ranked contender would leave very little ground between him and another title opportunity.
Song has even more to gain.
Beating Nurmagomedov would be the best victory of his UFC career. Doing it in Shanghai, after already finishing Figueiredo in Macau, would completely change his position in the bantamweight title race.
That’s what makes this one worth watching.
One fighter is trying to prove that his first championship defeat was only a setback.
The other has the chance to derail him in front of his own crowd.
