As ever, the race will feature 21 stages. The first nine stages will take place daily, before a rest day on Monday 5th July in Tignes. The next six stages will then take place over the following six days, with a second rest day in Andorra la Vella on Monday 12th July.

2020 Tour de France Winner

Tadej Pogačar was the general classification winner of the Tour de France in 2020 and got his hands on the yellow jersey. The Slovenian, who was riding for UAE Team Emirates, was making his Tour de France debut but was extremely impressive as he upset the odds to win three individual stages as well as the overall race.

At just 21-years-old, Pogačar became the second youngest Tour de France winner after Henri Cornet in 1904. He also became the first rider in history to win the general classification (yellow jersey), young rider (white jersey) and mountains (polka dot jersey) classifications in the same Tour.

Has a Canadian ever won the Tour de France?

As of 2021, no Canadian has ever won the general classification of the Tour de France. However, there have been a few close calls down the years.

Alex Stieda was the first Canadian to make his mark on the Tour de France. In the 1986 edition of the race, he became the first North American to wear the yellow jersey as he led on the second day. Unfortunately, he went on to finish 120th.

Two years later, Steve Bauer won the first stage and wore the yellow jersey for five days. He then went on to secure the highest placing from a Canadian to date, riding to a fourth-place overall finish.

More recently, Ryder Hesjedal has come the closest to Tour de France success. In 2010, he finished fifth in the overall classification, the highest Canadian finish since Bauer in 1988.
