Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney have taken their biggest step yet towards one of the most interesting fights in American boxing.
After months of arguing over weight, the unbeaten world champions have now publicly agreed to meet at 145lb, two pounds below the normal welterweight limit. Stevenson accepted Haney’s latest proposal on 8 October, potentially removing the issue that had repeatedly stalled negotiations.
Both men currently feature among the leading names in our pound-for-pound boxing rankings 2026, which tells you why this is worth paying attention to.
There is still an important catch. Shakur Stevenson vs Devin Haney is not officially signed at the time of writing. There is no confirmed date, venue or UK broadcaster yet.

Is Shakur Stevenson vs Devin Haney Happening?
It looks more likely than it has for months.
Haney publicly offered to fight Stevenson at 145lb with no rehydration clause, suggesting December 2026 as the target.
Stevenson then responded by accepting the weight. That matters because weight had become the biggest obstacle between them.
Haney is the current WBO welterweight champion and has established himself at 147lb. Stevenson only moved to 140lb in January and had previously pushed for the fight to take place at 144lb.
The two fighters have now apparently settled on the middle ground. What they have not done is announce a completed contract.
So the current position is:
- Fight: Shakur Stevenson vs Devin Haney
- Status: In negotiations
- Proposed weight: 145lb catchweight
- Rehydration clause: Haney has requested none
- Proposed timing: December 2026
- Date: TBC
- Venue: TBC
- UK broadcaster: TBC
Until promoters announce the fight formally, that is as far as we can go.
Why Are Stevenson and Haney Fighting at 145lb?
Because neither boxer really wanted to fight at the other man’s natural current weight.
Haney moved to welterweight and beat Brian Norman Jr to win the WBO title last November.
Stevenson, meanwhile, only made his super-lightweight debut against Teofimo Lopez in January.
That leaves seven pounds between the championship limits of their current divisions.
Stevenson initially wanted 144lb. Haney preferred a normal welterweight fight at 147lb. The compromise is 145.
It gives Stevenson some protection from making his first jump all the way to the welterweight limit, while Haney only has to come two pounds below 147.
Our boxing weight classes guide explains how the lightweight, super-lightweight and welterweight limits fit together.
What Is the Rehydration Clause Argument?
This has probably caused even more friction than the actual catchweight.
A rehydration clause limits how much a boxer can weigh after the official weigh-in.
Stevenson had pushed for restrictions because Haney is naturally the bigger man and could potentially regain significant weight between weighing in and entering the ring.
Haney did not want that. His latest proposal was clear: 145lb, but no rehydration clause.
Stevenson’s public acceptance of the 145lb offer did not repeat a demand for the clause, which has increased optimism that the issue can finally be resolved. However, until the contract is signed, I would not say with certainty that every detail has been agreed.
The reasoning behind Stevenson’s concern is pretty obvious. Making 145lb on Friday is one thing.
What Haney weighs when the first bell goes on Saturday is another.
What Title Would Be on the Line?
That has not been formally confirmed either.
Haney holds the WBO welterweight championship, while Stevenson is the WBO super-lightweight champion.
The WBO currently lists Haney as champion at 147lb and Stevenson as champion at 140lb.
A world title can sometimes be defended at a catchweight below the normal divisional limit, so fighting at 145lb does not automatically prevent Haney’s welterweight belt from being involved.
Boxing News has reported that the WBO title could potentially be at stake. But again, could is doing important work there.
Until the WBO or the event promoter confirms the championship terms, we should not call this a welterweight title fight.
If Haney’s belt does go on the line and Stevenson wins it, Shakur would become a world champion in a fifth weight division.
Shakur Stevenson’s Last Fight
Stevenson produced probably the best performance of his professional career against Teofimo Lopez in January.
He moved to 140lb for the first time and comfortably outboxed Lopez over 12 rounds at Madison Square Garden.
All three judges scored it 119-109. The victory made Stevenson a four-weight world champion and moved his record to 25-0.
It also answered a question that had followed him for years. Everybody knew Stevenson was technically excellent.
Lopez was the first opponent with the résumé and profile to make people wonder whether those skills would still look as impressive against another elite boxer.
They did. Stevenson controlled range, repeatedly found the jab and rarely allowed Lopez to settle into the fight he wanted.
Moving another five pounds upwards against Haney presents a very different problem.
Devin Haney’s Last Fight
Haney has not fought since beating Brian Norman Jr in November 2025. That victory made him a three-weight world champion.
Haney dropped Norman in the second round before controlling enough of the remaining fight to take a unanimous decision. The judges scored it 117-110, 116-111 and 114-113.
Most importantly, he showed that he could handle a genuine welterweight.
Haney had spent much of his career at lightweight before moving through 140lb, so there were legitimate questions about whether his style would translate against naturally bigger men.
Norman was supposed to answer them. Haney won.

Why Has the Fight Taken So Long?
Stevenson and Haney have discussed fighting each other for months.
At one point, a 144lb catchweight appeared possible. Then it didn’t.
Haney wanted to operate as a proper welterweight. Stevenson did not want to move directly from 140lb to facing a champion at the full 147lb limit.
There was also the rehydration disagreement. Both men then started looking elsewhere.
Stevenson was linked with Manny Pacquiao and Gary Antuanne Russell, while Haney had a mandatory situation involving Keyshawn Davis.
Those routes have not produced fights, which brought Stevenson and Haney back to each other.
Sometimes boxing matchmaking really is that simple. Two elite fighters need opponents.
The biggest available opponent happens to be each other.
Who Would Have the Advantage?
This is where the fight gets really interesting. Technically, I probably favour Stevenson. Physically, I favour Haney.
Stevenson is one of the best defensive boxers in the sport. He judges distance brilliantly, rarely wastes punches and is extremely difficult to hit cleanly when he controls the centre of the ring.
Haney has many of the same qualities.
He has an excellent jab, good feet and plenty of experience winning tactical fights where very little separates the two men.
The difference is size. Haney has already completed a full welterweight world-title fight.
Stevenson has never boxed above 140lb. At 145lb, that cannot simply be ignored.
Stevenson may be the more naturally gifted boxer, but he still has to deal with someone who could be considerably heavier by the time they enter the ring.
Stevenson vs Haney Prediction
If the fight gets signed at 145lb with no rehydration restriction, I would slightly favour Shakur Stevenson by decision.
But I would not be hugely confident. The weight makes it much closer.
I think Stevenson is a little sharper defensively and slightly better at controlling the exact range where a fight takes place.
Against Lopez, he showed how difficult it is to force him away from his preferred rhythm.
Haney is far more disciplined than Lopez, though.
He is not going to spend six rounds chasing Stevenson around hoping something changes.
This could become an extremely tactical fight where individual clean punches decide rounds.
The biggest unknown is whether Haney’s size eventually starts making those close exchanges favour him.
For now, I still trust Stevenson’s timing enough to give him the edge.
Prediction if the fight is finalised: Shakur Stevenson by unanimous decision.
When Could Stevenson vs Haney Be Announced?
December is the target Haney has put forward publicly.
An earlier report linked the fight with 28 November in Atlanta, but that was never formally confirmed, and Haney has since specifically talked about December.
The important change is that the biggest public disagreement now appears much closer to being solved.
Haney has moved from 147lb to 145. Stevenson has accepted 145. Now somebody has to put the contract in front of them.
If that happens, this immediately becomes one of the biggest fights left on the 2026 calendar.
