Why Did Shakur Stevenson Leave Zuffa Boxing

Shakur Stevenson has left Zuffa Boxing only three months after signing with Dana White’s new promotion. The unbeaten WBO super-lightweight champion never actually fought under the Zuffa banner and is now a free agent after asking to be released from his deal. Any future markets on Stevenson’s next fight can be found through BetVictor’s boxing odds page.

The split followed a frustrating few months in which several possible fights failed to materialise. Talks involving Devin Haney, Gary Antuanne Russell and Manny Pacquiao all came and went, while Stevenson spent long stretches preparing without receiving a confirmed date. He has now decided to take greater control over his career and plans to launch his own promotional company.

Why Did Shakur Stevenson Leave Zuffa Boxing?

The main issue appears to have been inactivity.

Stevenson said he had spent around eight weeks in training camp while expecting fights to be finalised, only for those plans to repeatedly fall through. At 29 and already established as a multi-weight world champion, he clearly did not want another large part of his prime spent waiting for negotiations to move.

That eventually led Stevenson to ask Zuffa Boxing for his release, which the promotion granted. He has not presented the split as a major personal falling out with Dana White or Zuffa, instead framing it as a business decision after the relationship failed to produce the activity he expected.

The speed of the exit is what makes the story unusual. Stevenson only signed a multi-fight deal in July and was considered one of Zuffa Boxing’s biggest early additions. By October, he was gone without appearing on a single card.

What Happened With Shakur Stevenson vs Devin Haney?

The proposed Devin Haney fight became the biggest example of Stevenson’s frustrations.

For a while, the matchup appeared to be moving in the right direction. Stevenson and Haney publicly discussed meeting at 145lb, a catchweight sitting between Stevenson’s 140lb division and the normal welterweight limit of 147lb.

Stevenson had accepted that figure earlier in October, which looked like it had removed one of the biggest obstacles in negotiations. The fight still never reached the point where a date, venue and completed contract were announced.

The talks then deteriorated again. Stevenson blamed Haney’s side for changing its position late, while Haney’s camp disputed that version and raised other issues surrounding the proposed terms.

We covered the earlier negotiations in our Shakur Stevenson vs Devin Haney article.

The weight discussion was especially important because Stevenson had only recently moved to super-lightweight. A jump straight from 140lb to a full welterweight contest would have been another significant step up in size.

Did Shakur Stevenson Ever Fight for Zuffa Boxing?

No. Stevenson signed with Zuffa Boxing in July 2026 and left roughly three months later without making an appearance for the promotion.

That is probably the clearest sign of why the relationship broke down so quickly. Stevenson had joined expecting major fights and regular activity, but none of the proposed matchups reached the ring.

Haney attracted the most attention, although Gary Antuanne Russell and Manny Pacquiao were also discussed as possible opponents during Stevenson’s time with Zuffa. By the time October arrived, he still had no confirmed fight date.

For a fighter already operating near the top of boxing’s pound-for-pound conversation, remaining inactive for most of a year was becoming increasingly difficult to justify.

When Did Shakur Stevenson Last Fight?

Stevenson has not fought since January 2026, when he beat Teofimo Lopez by unanimous decision to win the WBO super-lightweight title.

The victory extended his professional record to 25-0 and made him a world champion in another weight division. It also looked like the beginning of what could have been a very active year.

Instead, most of the months since have been dominated by discussions about who Stevenson might fight rather than an actual confirmed opponent.

That gap between appearances appears to have played a major role in his decision to leave Zuffa.

Is Shakur Stevenson Still a World Champion?

Yes. Leaving Zuffa Boxing does not mean Stevenson loses his WBO super-lightweight championship.

His promotional contract and his status as world champion are separate matters, so he remains the WBO title holder at 140lb.

Stevenson has also indicated that he wants to continue taking major fights around lightweight and super-lightweight before eventually moving towards welterweight.

That leaves him with plenty of options, although the important part now is turning one of them into an actual signed fight.

What Is Shakur Stevenson Doing Next?

Stevenson says he plans to start his own promotional company and take greater control over the direction of his career.

That does not necessarily mean he will attempt to promote every future fight by himself. He has also said he remains willing to work with other promoters and networks when the right opportunities are available.

The likely model is therefore more flexible than simply replacing one exclusive promotional contract with another. Stevenson could work with different companies depending on the opponent, broadcaster and event.

That flexibility may make certain fights easier to negotiate, particularly when an opponent is tied to another promoter. It also puts more responsibility on Stevenson and his team to make sure those opportunities actually happen.

Could Shakur Stevenson Work With Matchroom Again?

A future relationship with Matchroom would not be surprising.

Stevenson has worked with Eddie Hearn previously and has retained a good relationship with him, even after moving on to Zuffa Boxing. His decision to become a free agent means there is nothing stopping the two sides working together again if the right fight comes along.

That does not necessarily mean Stevenson will sign another traditional long-term promotional agreement.

His current plan appears to be based around independence, with his own promotional company giving him more control while still allowing him to collaborate with established promoters.

For someone trying to land fights across several weight divisions, that approach could make sense.

Who Could Shakur Stevenson Fight Next?

Devin Haney remains the biggest obvious option if both sides can repair their latest disagreement.

There is already interest in the matchup, both men are unbeaten world champions and the weight issue has been discussed enough that there is at least a framework for another round of negotiations.

Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis will also continue to be mentioned whenever Stevenson’s future comes up, simply because they are among the biggest names around the divisions he is targeting.

Nothing is close enough to call confirmed at the moment, though.

That is exactly why Stevenson has made this move. After spending much of 2026 hearing about possible opponents, his next priority will be securing a fight that actually reaches the ring.

Was Leaving Zuffa Boxing the Right Decision?

It is difficult to argue with the timing. Stevenson joined expecting activity and major fights, but instead spent months preparing for bouts that never materialised. At 29, another long stretch on the sidelines would have been more damaging than admitting the arrangement was not working.

The question now is whether becoming a free agent actually fixes the problem. Stevenson has more control over his career, but that only matters if he can turn that freedom into the opponents he wants. If he finally lands Haney, Davis, Garcia or another major name, leaving Zuffa Boxing will look like a smart decision.

If the same negotiations continue to collapse under a different promotional setup, the issue may prove harder to solve. For now, Stevenson has taken control back into his own hands, and his next fight should tell us whether that decision has opened the door to the opportunities he was expecting in the first place.
