What club is Kalvin Phillips currently at?
Kalvin Phillips currently plays for Manchester City, with the England international having moved there from Leeds United in the summer of 2022. However, since his switch from Leeds, where he was a first-team regular, Phillips has failed to make any sort of impression at Manchester City under manager Pep Guardiola. He’s made just twenty-nine appearances since signing, but they’ve only amounted to a paltry 808 minutes on the pitch, which is effectively nine full games.
Phillips, 28, became a wanted man after his performances with both Leeds and England. And, because he is English, Guardiola snapped him up and added him to his midfield department, with the hope of developing his game further as he has done with fellow England international Jack Grealish. But things sadly haven’t worked out as expected, and Phillips remains a substitute, usually unused. There’s currently no sign of this changing, with Guardiola preferring to use defenders such as Rico Lewis and Manuel Akanji over Phillips in the middle of the park.
Will he stay at Man City?
Kalvin Phillips is almost certain to leave Manchester City in the upcoming transfer window. Or, at the very latest, in the summer of 2024. Since arriving at the Etihad, he’s been on the periphery and finds himself significantly down the pecking order to play in the midfield department. Phillips was seen as a player who could deputise or even play alongside Rodri, but since Phillps swapped Leeds for Manchester, so have fellow central midfielders Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes, making the thirty-one-time England cap’s predicament an even trickier one.
Manchester City odds where the title is concerned won’t be affected by Phillips’ departure, and neither will their actual chances of defending their crown. It’s why Guardiola himself has made it clear Phillips has no future at the club when he recently said, “It’s just because I visualise some things and visualise the team and things – and I struggle to see him.” But, as always, Phillips leaving City has to be in a deal that works for everyone, including the player, who will undoubtedly want to go somewhere where he’s guaranteed game time as Euroe 2024 is on the horizon.
Will he move to Newcastle?
If you rolled back the clock several months or so, you probably wouldn’t have considered Newcastle as a destination for Phillips, especially after they acquired the services of Sandro Tonali in the summer. But, a long-term ban for Tonali and an injury crisis later, and you can see just why Newcastle would be taking a keen interest in Phillips, especially when they know he’s probably available and they’d more than likely be able to offer him the level of first-team football he’s looking for, at least for now until the end of the current campaign.
Premier League betting markets have Newcastle pegged as a team that should be in the conversation to finish in the top four. But after all of the above, and because they’ve been competing on multiple fronts, the top four could slip away from them. Bringing in a player like Phillips would be a welcome boost and offer quality and energy in what has often been a depleted or rejigged midfield. However, they’d more than likely be keen to take Phillips on loan at this stage rather than do a full transfer, knowing Tonali will be back in late August of next season.
Will he move to Liverpool?
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has recently spoken about how difficult it has been to attract defensive midfielders to the club. After seeing Fabinho depart for Saudi Arabia in the summer, The Reds signed Wataru Endo, a thirty-year-old defensive midfielder from Stuttgart, in a surprise move. But like Phillips at City, Endo has been on the periphery.
Phillips would be an upgrade on the defensive midfielder options Klopp has in his squad, while also giving the German more options to work with, but immediately, you’d have to ask if Manchester City would be willing to sanction a move to Anfield, especially when Liverpool odds for the title suggest they’re in with a big chance to steal the trophy away from the Etihad.
The football odds right now suggest Phillips is more likely to head to an Italian club or Newcastle than he is to join Liverpool, but you can never say never. This is especially the case when Guardiola has said he “feels sorry” for his midfielder and is likely to try to make things right with him after feeling like he has let Phillips down since he arrived at Man City in 2022 from his hometown club.
