Grand National Runners & Trainers List

grand national runners and trainers

The clock is counting down to the beginning of the Grand National, which is believed to be the largest horse racing event in the UK for this year. This race brings together viewers from every corner of Earth with around 10 million people watching it annually.

There are several options to take into account while choosing a horse for individuals who wish to wager on the Grand National odds. The jockey that will ride each horse is one of these; the list of riders won’t be revealed until closer to the event. That being said, trainers are incredibly important too!

In this post, BetVictor looks at the trainers of all runners in the Grand National, alongside a brief overview of the form surrounding the main contenders. We also share two betting tips for the 2024 Grand National!

Corach Rambler (Lucinda Russell)

Corach Rambler, trained by Lucinda Russell, is the top contender for the 2024 Grand National. The horse won the 2023 event with relative ease, demonstrating its suitability for the long race and demanding jumps.

I Am Maximus (W P Mullins)

Maximus, the horse trained by the renowned W P Mullins, is the next contender. He now has his sights set on this year’s prized Grand National at Aintree after dominating at the Cheltenham Festival. I Am Maximus is set to succeed if the trainer’s calibre is any indication.

Vanillier (Gavin Cromwell)

Trained by Gavin Cromwell, Vanillier came second in the previous Grand National, beaten by the aforementioned Corach Rambler. While it’s not been a steady season for Vanillier, the most recent result for this horse came on February 24th 2024 at Fairyhouse, where they came second after a mighty display by I Am Maximus.

Panda Boy (M Brassil)

Martin Brassil trains Panda Boy, a horse that has had a mixed bag of results over the past two seasons. Although he hasn’t finished first in any race during this period, it’s clear that Martin is happy with the progress of the horse. If Panda Boy has improved yet again since his 4th place finish in Leopardstown earlier this year, the 8-year-old horse could certainly be one to watch!

Meetingofthewaters (W P Mullins)

Another horse for W P Mullins in the Grand National is Meetingofthewaters. This 7-year-old horse ran less than one month ago, finishing 3rd out of 21. Meetingofthewaters did run a solid race. However, it started to peter out on the last 2 fences. Stamina is never normally a problem with horses trained by Willie Mullins, leading many to think this was a one-off affair.

Mahler Mission (J C McConnell)

Trained by J C McConnell, Mahler Mission is a horse that has performed well over the past season. In 2023, Mahler Mission managed to accumulate 3 second-place finishes, alongside one win, with the only other outing resulting in a fall. One thing to keep in mind is that this horse is coming off a rather long break, so this may have an impact on its overall consistency.

Kitty’s Light (Christian Williams)

When looking at the form of Kitty’s Light, trained by Christian Williams, the results are a bit all over the place. It’s clear that this horse certainly has potential after winning a string of 3 competitive races at the start of 2023. However, Kitty’s Light has come off the boil in their last 5 outings. If the horse recaptures its form from early last year, it could certainly put up a good fight and challenge for the win.

Noble Yeats (E Mullins)

The horse that won the 2022 Grand National, trained by Emmet Mullins, is back after a fourth-placed finish last year. When it comes to Noble Yeats, it’s clear that the horse has the potential to dominate the field. They have been ridden twice this year already, too, winning once at Cheltenham in early January.

Mr Incredible (W P Mullins)

Yet another entrant in the 2024 Grand National for the widely respected W P Mullins. This horse also shows plenty of promise, as you’d expect of horses trained by Willie, with one second and two third-placed finishes from the last four races. One point of concern would be the other race, in which Mr Incredible unseated their rider.

Galvin (Gordon Elliott)

One of the older horses amongst the favourites for this year’s Grand National is Galvin, trained by Gordon Elliott. Many people have said that the best racing days for this horse are behind them, with their form backing this up. Galvin hasn’t finished in the top three since the beginning of 2023, despite racing 5 times. Gordon Elliott has his work cut out in order to bring Galvin back into fighting form!

Limerick Lace (G P Cromwell)

Trained by G P Cromwell, Limerick Lace is in the form of their life before entering the 2024 Grand National. They’re coming off the back of 2 wins, one of which came at Cheltenham after beating the favourite Dinoblue by 3/4 of a length. Limerick Lace and G P Cromwell will be looking to go 3 for 3 at Aintree, with the Grand National being the most prestigious win of them all!

Minella Indo (Henry De Bromhead)

After a tumultuous 2023, Minella Indo and Henry De Bromhead are heading to Aintree following nearly 4 months of not racing. The previous 5 races for Minella Indo contained one victory on January 1st, together with another one during October. However, there are additionally two fourth-place endings amid these successes; moreover, this horse was also pulled up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup of year 2023.

Capodanno (W P Mullins)

Capodanno, trained by W P Mullins, has already raced twice in 2024. The most recent outing was a fourth-place finish at Cheltenham; however, Capodanno did put up a win in late January, jockeyed by the highly touted Paul Townend.

Chemical Energy (Gordon Elliott)

Gordon Elliott trains Chemical Energy, with the horse having an impressive end to the 2022 season. Unfortunately, this form was not replicated in 2023, with only a second-placed finish to speak of from four outings. Chemical Energy is still young at 7 years of age and Gordon Elliott is one of the trainers you’d want to steer them in the right direction.

Latenightpass (Dan Skelton)

At 11 years old, Latenightpass is the oldest of the favourites covered on this page. Dan Skelton is the trainer after taking over from T Ellis in mid-2023. The form of Latenightpass has improved since then, however, their last outing only led to a fifth-placed finish.

Grand National Betting Tips

We have two Grand National betting tips to consider, one revolving around a win and the other being more of an each-way punt.

Corach Rambler To Win

When it comes to the Grand National, the best horses tend to rise to the top. This is exactly what we think will happen with Corach Rambler. He’s in fine form and has already proven that the Grand National is somewhat his stomping ground. A repeat of his run last year and Corach Rambler should coast to victory in the 2024 iteration!

Shakem Up’arry Each-Way

It’s not unusual for an outsider to finish with a place at the Grand National. Of all the horses in the field, we think Shakem Up’arry stands a solid chance. He’s won both of his last two races, both of which were at Cheltenham.

Of course, this horse is also owned by Harry Redknapp, which means a captivating story could be brewing at Aintree!
